Re: Finding my dad's 1968 GMC

Scratch that, letter got forwarded and delivered. Looks like it's in the middle of Louisiana now. Ball's in their court now, hopefully they'll respond.

I'll hopefully have news here within a week.

Still no word. Hoping that they're thinking about it, instead of just blowing me off. Gonna wait a month or so, might send a "let me know what's up so I can either keep this door open or close it for this saga" letter.

Re: Finding my dad's 1968 GMC- current owner replied

Heard back from the owners - they've been taking very good care of it, and are doing work on the interior and freshening up the engine.

They also said it's not for sale, but I'll be first in line. I'm going to keep chatting with them, and maybe tell them to "name your price, I'll try to make it happen." I'm definitely not going to pester them, or be a nuisance. If it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen, as heartbreaking as it can be.

Here's a picture from the owner, snapped this morning.

Great job, at least you found it, and it is still on the road in one piece. So at least there is still hope. It is a beautiful truck. I wish I could find mine I let slip away 30 years ago.

The up side is that you now know where it is. Nice detective work with a bit of (cough, cough) help.

Buy another truck, fix it up, and offer them a trade.

Well I can see why you would like it back in the family. Find another in the mean time and enjoy it!

Awesome!

They'll eventually sell... I just hope they don't find this site and realize how much a real GMC shorty 4x4 is worth

Re: Finding my dad's 1968 GMC

So I think my next course of action is to buy my own truck, and fix it up close to how my dad's is.

So... How much does a true 68 4x4 GMC shorty cost? I'm going to be putting my Gran Torino up for sale and saving up.

Thanks to everyone and their help in this journey. I'm glad I found it, a bit sad that they won't sell, but such is the journey of life.

Re: Finding my dad's 1968 GMC

If you can find one in good condition (like your dad's) I would think at around $15K or more.

Finding one is going to be the hard part... it's hard enough to find a Chevrolet.

It may be "cheaper" to cut down a longbed 4x4 and make a clone, or buy a cut down truck. Heck, even the longbed 4x4's are getting $$.
