Project "Fastest Flatbed in the West"

A couple months ago I picked up an inexpensive 1965 C20 flat bed from a local refrigeration shop that bought it new and used it as a delivery truck. I had plans to let my wife use it to haul hay around to the horses but my inner gear head got the best of me. Since then I have started a parts collection to build a "rat rod" flat bed with late model running gear.

[IMG][/IMG]
5.3 Vortec

[IMG][/IMG]
Heads ported, surfaced, and put back together

[IMG][/IMG]
OBX Turbo Headers

[IMG][/IMG]
Ported my throttle body

[IMG][/IMG]
Rocker Trunion Upgrade

[IMG][/IMG]
Some "Candy Copper" Bling

[IMG][/IMG]
Getting closer

[IMG][/IMG]
New disc brakes and drop spindles

[IMG][/IMG]
And now the good stuff...

I still have tons of work to do like actually tearing the truck down. I need to figure out my power steering box situation and also rear suspension. I have a big bearing 9" that I am planning on using along with a porterbuilt trailing arm cross member and some coil overs. Picked up a set of 15x14 weld drag lites and 31x16.50x15 hoosier quick time dot tires...

Re: Project "Fastest Flatbed in the West"

Finally had some time to tear my nice running truck apart. Hopefully I can get it back together.

Long road ahead still but I did get the control arms ripped out from under it. I need to sand blast them to clean it up. I'll feel better once the new parts start going on. After reading on here I see the thing to do is find a new donor truck, wish I had gone that route to save money. I ordered all new products from CPP and POL.

Re: Project "Fastest Flatbed in the West"

Been busy figuring out some front end issues. Mixing c10 parts with c20 parts was tricky but after a couple trips to the machine shop and reordering parts, I think I have a handle on it.

Now I am getting closer to setting the motor and transmission so I can mock up all the turbo stuff and fuel system. I did get my standalone ecu in today. Plug and play harness and pre-modded microsquirt with the Sloppy Mechanics turbo tune preloaded. This thing is tiny! Free t shirt even!

Got my shifter in also. "Truck" shifter from Kilduff Machine. I must have missed a measurement because its a snug fit but a little notch in the bench seat should take care of that.

Re: Project "Fastest Flatbed in the West"

Got a little bit of time yesterday to work on the truck. Had a change of plans with the turbo and ended up buying a BW S480 T6 (upgrade!) and a hot side already built.

Also built a turbo brace. Dropped it off to get powder coated and the hot side to get ceramic coated.

I started sanding on a door too. The previous owner had done a spray can paint job that was horrible so now its on to the patina look. Also gutted the interior to start on that while I am waiting for more parts to show up.

Re: Project "Fastest Flatbed in the West"

Making a little progress. Just a mock up but things are looking promising. Intercooler fitment is going to be an issue but I think I have a trick up my sleave.

Re: Project "Fastest Flatbed in the West"

So after a long hiatus, I have finally started working on this pig again. Nothing like going to a car show to light the fire again.

Finally got the intercooler mounted. I need to build an air dam next to hang below the bumper to scoop up fresh air.

Itching to hear this thing fire...
