Friends giving me a good deal on a shortbed frame, no title. Can I just use the existing title I have? Or do I need a title for frame/cab or what?

How much would getting a title cost, and what if someone has the title already (but just using the cab) and sold the frame?

HELP, Its a good deal too lol

Here in Missouri they title the cab not the frame. I don't know about where you live.

In nevada they check the frame #s on the driver side front rail to the cab vin.. Never had one not match but I can imagine the hassle if it didnt..

You really need to ask your local authorities, the DMV or whatever you got. Here in South Dakota you have to file special papers that show both VIN's, get a new VIN assigned to the vehicle, and you usually need both titles or at the very least a well done bill of sale for one of the items and the title for the other. These things vary from state to state so you really need to go through the hassle of asking locally.

I recently saw a truck here that was a legal issue waiting to happen. A nice '72 sitting on a mid-70's 3/4 ton 4x4 frame. Problem is that it is still officially registered as a 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive. First issue for my area is taxes as registration costs are affected by rated weight, not to mention the mismatched VIN's if the police ever checked. I know that really doesn't quite fit your situation but what I'm saying is do it right and you won't have any worries in the future.

Also for our Idaho truck owners:
I bought my truck in Oregon, it did have a title but my door jam vin was missing so I had DMV look at the frame s/n when I went to register. Well the s/n on the frame does not show the first several letters/numbers, as in KE1 which I told them means only that its a 4x4, V8, 1/2 ton and they could see thats what it was, even though the Oregon titled showed all the letters/number they did not want to accept it. Since I had no spid, I ordered one here from a board member with actual letters and numbers off Oregon title and what matched the frame numbers and stuck it in the glove box door. My truck is titled a 68 but I do believe I have a 67 cab, yet I do have a low s/n last of vin number is 72 of first 68s produced. Anyway took it to DMV they looked at the spid and said ok, no problem...also cost me $23 to have DMV make a vin tag and they installed it on my door. Not original looking but a vin plate and they rivited on door jam issued by Idaho. I did locate a company back East who makes original vin plates, but at a cost of $250.00 and additional $24 for original pop rivits, at this point seemed to much to pay so went with Idaho vin. I suppose you just need to look at your state and see what they want..good luck, theres ways of doing it and still be legal.
