I am guessing as I have not measured this the difference is from the closed knuckle arm is straight and the open 44 diff arm curls back
when the pitman tie rod arm failed on my 68 I hacked on a 71 up arm onto it

Playing with these trucks i have only found power steering on the 69 and up dana 44 open knuckle diffs your original darg link is shorter and not sure if clocking is different on manual box
I dealt with this on my 69 by swaping to a open knuckle 44 and upgraded at the same time to disc brakes

My 68 i made it as small as i could and lived with it until the old manual box wore out too much i had planed on open 44 front upgrade then my collection of these trucks expanded
I now scrounged a 60 rear and looking for a 60 front for it
