67 68 hood angle
Anyone know why Chevy/GMCs hood was changed to high angle in 69. Just a styling change? Clearance issue?

I heard that the GM designer of the 67 left GM because he was ticked they changed the hood and went to Hot Wheels. Back then they changed styles from year to year.

In the article posted here is was because that Ford and Dodge trucks looked more masculine... GM didn't care for the more delicate car-like look, and they tried to "toughen up" the profile and image of the truck... And yes, the design team was not amused. Kind of went against everything they tried to do with the truck with the design change.
I still prefer the hood and appearance of the 67-68 trucks. I believe them to be the best looking... So much so, in fact, that my '68 Anniversary truck actually uses a 1970 cab, and is titled as such. I built it as a '68 as much as I could, as it's the one I like.... So there you go. True confession. If you know my truck, and see me, you can call me on it and I'll tell you the truth... |

I'm partial to the '68s but the 67 and 68 and the 71 and 72 are my favorites. Dont care so much for 69-70's

I know it sounds strange but the 67-68 for the 2 wheel drives and the Blunter nose models for the four wheel drives fit best for me. The 67 was a pretty radical change for its day.

I love the 67-68 front end. I bought my 71 with a 67 front and bed. It's nice having 5 lug wheels and disc brakes to go with this design

Amazing... Looks almost like the one I did about 12 years ago!!!
Mine really was a 1968 though... I did the 5 lug conversion, front and rear and had 4 wheel disc brakes... 5.3 vortec, 4L60e, I think it's in Alabama now... I like yours though!!! Best wishes for a Happy New Year!! |

I pafer the GMC grill over the Chevys. its more classy. I think. And the quad headlights look cooler at night.

I like the slant noses... had a '68 for a long time, have 2 "blunt noses" currently. I kinda imagine an air intake in that flat vertical slab. It could have a 3.5" x 24" rectangular slot sliced into the front of the hood, on one side or both. It could scoop in cold air, rain water, dirt, bugs, birds..... It could be dressed with some trim around the opening and coarse screen added to keep possums & squirrels out. Maybe I'll get inspired later and cut some different shapes and sizes out of black construction paper and stick 'em on to see if it looks too STOOPID. I wouldn't do it to either of my mild motored trucks but I might consider it with a performance engine swap. Hot rod engines do like cold dense air.
Maybe I didn't IMAGINE this, I might've seen a picture somewhere.

I figure the grille is big enough as is. I think more intake, especially up there, would look excessive and detract from the appearance. I swear I have seen it done but don't know where. Maybe a competition vehicle, but it didn't make it look better.
They may have gone to the blunt, more truck-like (we know it was that), nose to accommodate the rapidly growing personal use 4wd and RV market. I mean '69 was first year for K/5, '70 4wd was available for the first time across the line-up, Suburbans had become much more comfortable & bigger, and campers were a huge market. Things had expanded well beyond the C/10 pickup. I like them all in any form. But if I could only have a 4wd and a 2wd it's 4wd 69-72 and 2wd 67/68. I want the blunt on a tall 4wd (that should have a winch bumper on front) and sleek on a short 2wd. More utility on one and more style on the other, in it's general outline. I'd really like to have an example of all. A 67/68 K-model is not wimpy looking and a 69-72 is no ugly duck
