Wood Beds

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can someone tell me what years wood was available for the bed floor in 67-72 chev/gmc trucks? Was it an option or was the steel floor the option? Or did steel become the standard at a certain point and wood was no longer available? If so, what year? Thanks, Ron

Re: Wood Beds

I am also interested in this question, my truck has the "remains" of a wood bed. I really want to put wood back. But wow is it expensive and time consuming. There is so much to fix on the truck. I also want to use the truck as a truck. The chrome trim that holds the boards down look fragile and hard to keep up. So any advice is helpful.

Re: Wood Beds

Per my research in the Standard Catalog of American Light Duty Trucks....

Wood bed floors in fleet side beds were available as an option until the end of production in 1972.

Wood bed floors in step side beds remained an option until the model change at the end of 1987.

Somebody else can correct me, but that's what I read...

Re: Wood Beds

My dad has my grandpa's old square body farm truck. Fleetside. Has a wood bed floor. Perhaps it was special ordered? It is a Canadian truck, maybe that makes a difference.

Well, there you go. First time I've been wrong in the last 15 minutes....

There is no way for me to know. My book definitely says wood bed floors ended in fleet side trucks in 1972. Maybe they replaced the metal floor at some point?

My research also says that, and I'll quote the source "many farmers preferred the wood bed floors.." "They believed they were less prone to rust, and cattle tended to not slip on them as frequently..."

I have no idea. My two hot rods are the only C-10's I've ever had that had wood bed floors. My dad always had metal floors... And I've welded diamond plate in the back of several early '60's trucks when the wood rotted or got broken. Was common practice in farm country...

Someone else will have the definitive answer...

Re: Wood Beds

In 1967 steel floors became standard and wood floors an option.
