71 C10 Daily "resto"

I've been a member for a few months, asked a few random questions, read a 100 or so different build threads. I guess it's time to start a thread for my most recent acquisition.

1971 C10 Fleetside Longbed. A fairly basic model without a lot of options from the factory. It did originally have a TH400, but it's currently got a 350/350 combo.

It's got good bones though. Fairly rust free. The drivers rocker has a little rust that was "repaired" by caulking a small piece of metal over the offending area. The passenger side rocker is perfect, however the floor right next to the rocker has some rust that was "repaired" by plugging the hole with blue RTV gasket maker.

This will be my new daily driver so it's not going to be a full restoration. But there are definitely some fixes and upgrades needed. I've already changed out the key lock cylinder and got new door locks keyed the same for installing after paint. I also installed an NRG quick release steering wheel adaptor and NRG steering wheel. The original wheel wasn't, and is cracked and missing pieces.

Here's how she currently looks, in black rattle can primer that melts right off with a little gas. 😂

Re: 71 C10 Daily "resto"

And here's what arrived today. 😀

I'm putting in a 3.5" / 5" static drop. I did a lot of shopping around and pricing parts out. In the end I went with a kit from Early Classic Enterprises. For what's included in the kit, it's priced out well. All the major components are manufactured here in the USA, and they were a pleasure to deal with on the phone. I ordered the kit on Monday and 3 out of 4 boxes arrived today. He did tell me upfront that one of the parts would be delayed a couple days. The tracking number shows it was already picked up. So I should have the rest of it in a few days.

2-1/2" drop spindles with 1" springs up front.
5" drop springs in the rear.
Super Track Bar kit.
KYB Gas-a-just shocks (upgrade option).
Shock relocation brackets.

Re: 71 C10 Daily "resto"

Another delivery today! 😀

Found the best price on eBay. Brand new set for below dealer cost (according to another seller who was $200 higher). Purchased on the 13th, received the shipping notification today, the 15th. Checked my tracking number and it says delivered today, left in front of garage! Wow!

They did only ship across the state, Fife,WA to Colville,WA. But that was quick service. TrendsAuto is the seller.

Re: 71 C10 Daily "resto"

Well I was hoping to get my drop kit completely installed today...but the best layed plans...everything takes longer than you think.

47 year old parts, rusty bolts, etc. We managed to snap off the upper spring mounting bolt and had to make a run to the farm store for a new one. Other than that everything came off ok. Had to apply some heat to the passenger trailing arm u-bolt in order to remove it.

So all in all, we got the new rear springs installed, the lower shock mounts and the track bar mounting bracket. Still need to drill out the rivets on the old upper shock mounts and install the new ones and the shocks. Then move on to the front that we didn't have time to touch.

I'm really liking how much lower the rear is. Can't wait to get the front dropped down and get the suspension finished.

Compare this picture to the one in the first post of this bread. The rear end is sitting pretty.

Looks good. Good luck with the front and drilling out those rivets for the shock relocation brackets. I did the shock brackets on mine a few hours ago and removing those rivets is fun from under the truck.

Re: 71 C10 Daily "resto"

Update finally!

Finished installing the lowering kit and got the front end down. I'm liking the new ride height. Progress was delayed by that evil white stuff falling on the only days that my son-in-law can help. (Saturdays). We had beautiful weather this past Saturday, but had a slight delay due to ruining the seal on the driver's side lower ball joint. Replaced it and finished the front end, but didn't get the rear shocks done due to running out of time.

Easter Sunday we had beautiful weather again so we finished off the rear shock mounts and wrapped up the rear end. Done! Even though it started out Sunny and warm, the wind blew in some rain clouds that then turned into more evil white stuff before we finished.

Overall, I'm happy with the ECE kit - with one exception. I chose the upgrade option for the shocks going with the Gas-A-Just shocks instead of the basic ones normally in the kit. The front ones went in with no issues. The rear ones would not mount on the provided bolts for the lower mount. This is due to the bushing sleeve in the shock.

I don't have the specialty tool for removing it so I had to improvise. The bolt trick didn't work, the socket trick ended up pushing out the entire rubber bushing with the metal sleeve still in it. In the end what we did was heating up the inside of the sleeve and driving a small screwdriver between the rubber and the sleeve - all the way around. I've had to remove the sleeves before on other vehicles, but they were all pretty easy in comparison. I'm not sure why the KYBs were so problematic.

Preview of the wheels. They're going to look great! Time to get the rubber ordered.

Re: 71 C10 Daily "resto"

Two questions:

Front lower ball joint - the one I replaced was spinning when we tried tightening the castle nut back on it. The new one does not. I tried a Google search, and that seems to be common as there were multiple links about how to tighten it when it spins. Why does it spin, and is that in issue that I should just replace the joint? (I did replace the drivers side due to a bad seal, but the passenger side we just went with it because the part stores were already closed by that time).

Front rotors - I've replace inummerable brake pads on all kinds of makes and models. The only time previously that I've run into a grooved rotor is from someone running the brake pads into nothing. I thought that was the case when I removed the drivers side and found a groove running down the center of the rotor. Then I found the exact same groove down the center of the passenger side. Was that stock? Or just prior bad maintenance that coincidentally grooved both sides exactly the same?

Re: 71 C10 Daily "resto"

factory rotor, every one I have encountered being original, had this groove also, sorry cannot help you with spinning nut on ball joint, I would just go ahead and replace it to be safe

Baby got new shoes! 3-1/2" front, 5" rear. I'm almost thinking I should have gone 4-1/2" and 6" instead. 😂

Sometimes it's just about the simple little things...

New rear view mirror and arm. I can see again! I need to get some replacement screws though. The original black ones stand out too much.

Looks awesome! The groove on the rotors is factory. I thought the same thing when I started working on replacing my brakes the first time too.
