Check out this custom dash

So I got sick of looking at that plastic dash pad... Went to my local lumber mill and grabbed a nice piece of walnut for $30 and hand made this dash... more pics of it installed once the poly dries!

Re: Check out this custom dash

It's cool and all ,BUT you have to remember that small dash PAD is the only thing in these trucks to keep your head from bashing into solid steel and glass if you unfortunately have a crash and if your still running just the original lap belts ...Well... in these days of everyone being used to airbags it's a whole lot different back in the day when these trucks were new when even a slow speed accident left the driver and passengers with serious injuries from bashing their face on the steering wheel or the dash If they were even wearing a seat belt. 67-72 is when all the safety equipment started showing up in the trucks

Okay, here it is installed with the new walnut steering wheel. I am also going to put a real walnut veneer on the glove box, which I think will really tie it all together

Re: Check out this custom dash

I have to admit, it looks nicer than I thought it would. Don't worry about the lack of padding, the steering wheel will break your head first. Personally, I've yet to see a homemade veneer on the glovebox door or instrument cluster that doesn't look hideous. Might not be a bad idea to leave it just like it is now. But ya never know... I guess if you don't like it once you've made it - you don't have to install it. In other words, I think the steering wheel and pad tie things together nicely already - perhaps more isn't better in this case. Now... Cheyenne/Cheyenne Super woodgrain door panels might be a good idear.

Why stop there?
You might as well put the veneer on the radio delete plate and the ash tray.

Looks amazing!

People also drove more carefully, the roads were not as packed and who needs safety equipment anyhow?

People also drove while drinking with minimal fear of losing your license!

I like it too. It kind of has a marine feel to it. I like what Jocko said... its true, our faces will have a steering wheel imprint first so whats the difference. I also agree with the home made wood dash and glovebox doors, turrible, just turrible! My 2 cents is only worth 1 cent so don't pay attention to me. Anyways, kudos for the idea and craftsmanship. Its the only one I've ever seen.

Freaking Awesome! That is a very fine job, why not veener the instrument cluster? That would tie the glove box together.

Re: Check out this custom dash

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it!

I think I will just make the veneer for the glove box for now and temporarily tack it up there to see what it looks like. I also agree with Jocko that a poorly done veneer job could look hideous, but if done right, with real walnut and cut right, with some light poly, she could look great.

Re: Check out this custom dash

I really like the topper that might look good with the dash in my '67. I used a piece of oak laminate floor covering on my ash tray. and a previous owner had made the other dash pieces (oak, I think) I restored it a few years back and added new (blue)Sunpro gauges and Tach, but my old tower crashed and I lost all the pictures I took.
