Question Re: Tailgate Lettering Technique

I picked it up in New Jersey . Was going to paint it since my truck is complex two tone but decided to leave it as is .

Re: Tailgate Lettering Technique

Bringing this back up to the top just in case someone with knowledge of the original tailgate lettering method sees this.

Re: Tailgate Lettering Technique

Hey man, I hope you're doing well.

I have always seen them 'back masked' but that is just in the case of a new paint job. I would assume you're just wanting to paint the letters on your gold truck?

I'm about to be doing this too, and I found this video on it. It will give you an idea on how they were done at the factory. Letter color first, then back masked and the body color sprayed over the top. Peel the tape and clear over everything.

But to just paint the letters I would just take my time and mask around the seam edges and use a quality primer and paint. Orileys sells a fairly inexpensive option (if you have spray guns and compressor) otherwise an aerosol spray would be my suggestion. I like the VHT epoxy based paints. Just me..

That video has nothing to do with how they were done at the factory (60-66). However the quality, I'm sure that guy took more time on that one gate than the factory took to spray out ten complete trucks, including stenciled letters done AFTER main color.
