To me that is fraud ... and there has been a lot of litigation in the Camaro Chevelle community over fake cowl tags and restamped blocks etc. And none have ended well for the seller that misrepresented them. This is the very reason Jerry Macneish is a paid inspector at Barret Jackson to prevent such litigation

Several red flags...the 2 right after the E on the vin signifies a 3/4 C20
Also there was never a swb custom camper

Sadly its a highlander so would have still been valuable either way

Yep, that's what the glovebox door is off of. The question is whether this is that truck shortened or is it a true short bed truck using the glovebox door attempting to make it appear as a factory big block short bed. The SPID is certainly altered, either way. We are looking at an attempt at deceit. Otherwise known as fraud

Who ever changed the WB on that SPID was clearly trying to pass that truck off as something it isn't. He would have been much better off leaving the SPID off.

I would say there is a good chance the seller didn't know or had his head in the sand.

A dealer here had a big block SWB that was cut down. I know the guy that built it and he has done a bunch of them.

A dealer bought it at an auction, kept It several years, "forgot" that it was cut down. Another local dealer bought it, and part of the SPID ended up laying in the glovebox. He sold it to another dealer who had it for sale. Then it hit the fan. A buyer figured it out.

They ended up selling it as a cut down truck and the middle dealer paid the last dealer back his losses. BTW I told the second dealer it was cut, but "he didn't hear me".

Sadly I messaged the seller asking if it was an original sb truck...he said it was....also said he had several more to choose from so he knew the deal...

As these truck go up in value this deceit will become more previlant its where the hobby is headed...on a positive note the legit trucks become more desireable

About every other week I find a 67-72 truck misrepresented on FB Marketplace. Most are advertised as a Cheyenne Super when it isn't. On occasion something like this pops up. I'll usually ask for the SPID to be posted and they ignore the request.

I think most people (buyers and sellers) look at these as TRUCKS not rare COPO Camaros or something. Originality means less than general condition. Those of us on this board are likely in the minority when it comes to scrutinizing SPIDs. So I could forgive a certain amount of ignorance on the part of sellers.

I bought my suburban about a year ago. The seller was baffled by requests for things like the SPID. He said 'Its just a suburban, I made it the way I wanted and wasn't concerned about keeping things like the seats original'.

Personally I wouldn't care if a truck was originally a short bed or not as long as the conversion was done properly. Now if the seller is claiming its something super rare and special and charging more for that, and is intentionally misrepresenting, that is a different story, but then again, that wouldn't be something I'd be considering anyway.

Side note, I took my wife to see a Monte Carlo SS that I saw on a "used Car lot" because she had one and I wanted to buy her another. Bottom line was she "taught" the used car sales man what a real SS was. The only thing real with his car was the option tag on the trunk lid.

I drink my coffee every morning looking at what 69-72 trucks are for sale on Ebay. I saw that one and also noticed that the guy that had it for sale had 100% positive feedback. My suspicion is that he had no idea the SPID was altered. I doubt the buyer had a clue either. I'm sure if the buyer starts taking it to shows and cruise in's someone will enlighten them. Who ever altered that SPID should be prosecuted.

I have a brother in law, and we work for a couple of doctors that could care less about SPID's and build sheets. They buy vehicles on quality and presentation. If you mentioned that SPID to them they wouldn't get it nor would they care.

I keep looking at the picture and I can't seem to figure out how they did the modification. It really looks original (faded, scratched, correct fonts, etc). You can't just apply white-out and shove the whole door in the type writer to write the "115" ???

I agree with 68bowtie. I look at that SPID picture and see what looks like a legit tag. How can we tell that they've been altered when it looks so legit?

It's been altered somehow because the vin on the spid says it is a 3/4 ton and that it has custom camper option, both of which were not available in 115 wheel base.

I would be interested to see if they cut the frame or if they put it on a factory shortbed frame and then if the numbers on the frame match the vin. If they swapped frames I wonder if they restamped the frame
