Cab was in the back and hard to get to last time I was there. It did not occur to me look for a "hole" in the floor board. But this fella could cut and weld and has a good bit of steel about. And he painted the cab the same yellow. If I was him, I would have made sure the hole for the shift stick was in the floor before I painted it. I'll check it out next week and report back.

A lot of people don't think that far ahead. You'll probably see a lot of that as you go through this critter.

Yea, I am already seeing a lot of that.
Me on the other hand, I get criticized for spending too much time thinking about it cause when I finally get to it, it looks too simple to have spent that much time on. Measure 5 times, cut once.

Re: Questions about an inherited '72 project

I finally was able to clear away a few things and get to the cab. It is for an automatic - no hole for the transmission shifter. Cab looks in good condition though. Did not see any rust.
I need to clear out a little more space tomorrow. It is resting on a nice welded "paint" frame with 6 inch wheels so I can easily roll it out in the sun and examine it. Hopefully, I can to the door and fenders tomorrow.

Re: Questions about an inherited '72 project

Apologize for whining about the cab being for an automatic
- probably should not post when I am worn out.

Owner has not made a final decision yet.
Yesterday, today and tomorrow I am Cleaning, finding parts, moving tools, finding parts.
Making an inventory - need to do that whether it gets rebuilt or sold

Edit: I found a high hump with shifter port behind a bench today. Also found what I think is a '69 307 with the automatic transmission bolted on. It will be a day at least to get to it (it is like an archeological dig in there). MOst of this has not been touched in 10 years.
Also started finding glass - vent windows for the doors.

Re: Questions about an inherited '72 project

I have a DPS trooper friend tell me that the Title needs to match the Frame, so the vin tag on the cab will not help. you will need to clean a little paint and find the number on the frame to see if you have a good title.

That is only true if you are going to haul it to the DPS as part of obtaining a new title to a truck that does not have a valid title. If you have a valid title, then all you have to do is inspect and register the truck and law enforcement is not involved.

If getting a new title in TX, a city policeman, constable, or other law enforcement that signs off on the truck may or may not care about how many VINs they see. My truck was assembled so perhaps it was easier for me. The city police chief that came to check my truck had me read off the VIN from the cab while he confirmed on the paperwork, then he signed it. The title company had already done a search on the VIN and the truck was not stolen.

So, the question is, must a title be obtained from scratch? If so, I recommend Tuesdee's Auto Titles office (903)887-2285.

Re: Questions about an inherited '72 project

It can be titled as long as you can show where you purchased the parts, so have him give you receipts with the numbers on them. Document everything, not that big a deal. If you have questions call the PD or the Motor Vehicle Dept

Re: Questions about an inherited '72 project

Status:
Truck is in Missouri not Texas. They can't find title. Ran the vin on a couple of those vin check sites - it comes up not found. Checked with DMV website and I can probably get an abandoned vehicle title but since the frame vin is not going to match the body vin, the DMV would probably have to issue a "new vin" on the title which would show both vins (I am unclear on this, it was confusing)
Truck Bed. Found another bed on a truck bed trailer in the pasture which is in better shape than the one in the driveway. It at least still has the wood bed strips although rusty.
Cab: Cab is up front of garage now. Doors are still on wall but I can't get a ladder in yet to haul em down. Hood, radiator support, grill, fenders. Interior door panels for '69 and '72. three steering columns, four steering wheels. couple of instrument cluster frames and a speedometer.
Engine: Two engines, two transmissions. One of the engines in the garage looks like it has an automatic transmission with a transfer case married. Holley carb, water pump, power steering pump, no brake parts yet (booster, master cylinder etc)
Bolts and fasteners: Found two buckets of bolts and Hood hinges. No door hinges or latches.
Found a Chiltons for 67-72 and a couple others with book marks in the pages.

Every time I find some objection to rebuilding the dang thing, I find the solution - it is like she wants to be rebuilt.
Probably won't make a decision till I haul all the stuff out of the rafters. three 4x8 sheets of plywood up there with stuff stacked.

Oh, I forgot. I found a radio - and I thought, perfect, that is all I really need anyway

It's all sounding good. Get DMV papers first every thing else seems like it will fall in place.

There is an ALC abrasive blaster, paint guns, and compressor and just about every tool you can think of except the torque wrench (but I am positive there must be one in there somewhere)
Was there for a week, now home for a couple to take care of things. Go back next month.

Great story. Its a combination Greek Tragedy, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Willard, and the birds (did I tell you about the football size mouse nest I found - dogs love mice better than those milk bone snacks - or the humongous birds nest?)

Re: Questions about an inherited '72 project

Found the Protect-O-Plate for the frame (i think)
has the right vin
Should be able to match frame, engine, transmission and rear end.
(what are the odds of finding the POP for a 50 year old truck frame?)

Re: Questions about an inherited '72 project

It seems too me that once you get the paper work in order that there is the basic parts there too put a truck together.

After all it was the fella's project that seems too have enough parts just not enough steam to clean it up and assemble it.

I wouldn't count that trans out just yet.
They are tough buggers.
Pop the shifter in neutral and see if the input turns.pull the plug and see what comes out.

Either way it goes good luck with your "dig".

Thanks for the encouragement. The more I dig, the more I think you are right. Just ran out of steam.

I haven't counted out the transmission yet. I don't want to start messing with it till I can get it inside before I try opening it up.
