Starter issue

Well put anew starter in last week. Last one just clunked no spin or engagement of the bendix. The old starter had a few shims on the outside bolt to close the gap between the shaft and flexplate . I installed the rebuilt one it's a delco core had to shim outside bolt again to get the 1/8th gap. Everything was good truck started nicely . Wife went to move it today and it was grinding and kicking back on the starter. Shims still in and bolts still tight but I have a large gap again. I had even put in new starter bolts dont see how the starter could move. Not much I could do with my hand like this but I did add another shim to the outside bolt sounded much better and it started.

Anyone else experience this with a rebuilt? It's an autozone lifetime rebuilt in Mexico.

Since the old starter was shimed the same way I'm thinking I may need to take down the pad on the cone a little at a time till it's at least close to use small shim

Sometimes with a new or different starter you need to add more support.
Like a starter brace.

Here’s my .02.
Don’t bother with the “Rebuilts”, because you’ll only get mor and more frustrated, as it’ll work fine for the first few times them start acting up.
I put “new” starters in my truck about every 3-4 months because they would start acting up, like the bedix wasn’t fully engaging, causing that go-awful grinding noise.
Just get the New AC Delco starter and be done with it. In addition, it has the best warranty.
Another thing I did was wrap the starter with a insulation blanket to prevent the Heat Soak from the Headers (common problem).
Since I did this three years ago, I haven’t had any more issues.

I used to have the worst luck with AutoZone rebuilt starters and alternators. Seems like I was replacing them 2 to 3 times a year.

I found a local shop that rebuilds starters and alternators. I took them one of each and had them rebuilt. I haven't had any more issues with them since then and it has been close to 15 years now since having them rebuilt.

the new style high torque starters is what I've switched to using. they crank over faster, weigh a lot less, a lot smaller in diameter for clearance of headers, are comparable in price to the old style gm starters. several threads on here about them.

That’s my advise also. Summit has them for a reasonable price.

My son had a starter that was wondering around like yours is. One day it was fine, the next it would sound awful. Finally took it off and hit the mating surface with a sanding disc on a grinder. Kinda roughed it up a bit, seemed to fix it. Haven't had a problem yet.

I usually ask for a 96 suburban 5.7. You also need the new bolts to go with it.

you can find them on e-bay cheapest. you'll need to order the bolt pattern that matches your old starter. if I remember correctly it only used one of the two small wires on the solenoid, I just taped the extra up so it wouldn't short out and still be there if you ever had to switch back to the old style starter.

For staggered mount starters with 168 tooth flywheel and 11 tooth starter pinion, use for example a 2003 chevy 3500 8.1L (O’Reilly’s # 712884A) for straight mount with 153 tooth flywheel and 9 tooth starter pinion, use for example a 1995 Corvette 5.7L (O’Reilly’s # 612671A). They are both Nippon-Denso style mini-starters, easy to get over the counter, and last forever, most with a lifetime warranty. In the mid 80’s GM changed the starter bolt hole diameter from standard to metric. The standard bolt will not hold a metric starter in place for very long, especially a high torque starter. To use newer starters and with older blocks you need to have starter bolts with knurled 10mm shanks and 3/8s thread. Delco P/N 6449 - offset bolt pattern, used mostly on SUV and truck blocks, for 14 inch 168 tooth flywheels. Delco P/N 6442 - straight bolt pattern, used mostly on cars blocks, for 12 3/4 inch 153 tooth flywheels.

Have dbelectronics mini on my 496 Chevelle never a problem but then again the 396 had an autozone cheapy for a couple of years . I'll most likely go with a new gm one

Put in a new DBelectric high torque mini . No shims and it’s dead nuts on . Little louder than stock but no more grinding . Going to return the rebuilt tomorrow it’s not even dirty

Awhile back I read a lot of negative response about DB Electric on another thread about starters. My experience with them has been VERY GOOD. I have their little starters on both my trucks, 1 SB, 1 BB & my B&S Vanguard powered golf cart. My Son has one of their starters in his K3500 6.5 diesel. I had problems with the frankenstein golf cart's starter, my fault, not their product. DB was very helpful. Free fast shipping & CHEAP . My only concern is where the products are manufactured.. I'm not sure but guessing chineez.

I have a one of their ht starters on my chevelle 496 never a problem . Only one that failed wasnt for high compression motors.

Agreed! I did this about 20 years ago, and haven't had an issue since. Before that, nothing but trouble from the rebuilts...
