Alternator Not charging....Voltage regulator ??

OK....I got all my other issues resolved except one...the alternator is not charging the battery. I pulled the wiring harness out of the voltage regulator and with an extra wire ran a jump from the red wire(#2) to the dark blue wire(#4) on the harness.....the alternator then begins to charge. So I figured a bad regulator. I got a new regulator at the parts store. Nope still not charging with the new regulator. Can someone give me something else to try?

If this is going to be a huge pain...couldn't I upgrade to a newer alternator that has an internal voltage regulator? If so has anybody done this and do you have a part # or know what year I need. Thanks

A single wire altinator is a simple swap and instructions can be found in the search on the board butttt, before you spend money on this---there are two very small in line fuses located on the engine wiring harness that can cause problems. Each one is a inline fuse located at the front corners of the harness---one between the battery and the fender on the pass side and one in about the same location on the drivers side. If one of these is blown, your gauge will not register and you may not get charge so check them first. If the alternator shorted and you blew the diodes, they would need to be replaced for it to work. You can take the alt to any auto parts place for free checking--auto zone, napa, etc.
