1978 P10 Step Van

New to the forum. I purchased a 1978 Chevy P10 Step van with a 292 L6. Stock Rochester 1ME carb. My issues is the accelerator cable is fraying at the peddle end. The carb end uses a push on connector. I have not been able to find a cable to replace it that has the right ends. Does anyone out there know what I could use to fix it? I can post pictures if needed.
Thanks
Travis

Re: 1978 P10 Step Van

i come up with gm part number 1248092 for 78 p10 with a 292,[discontinued].. check out mill supply co 1-800-888-5072 they make a aftermarket cable to replace the discontinued gm cable.their part number is 54-910 $27.19 ,they have a picture of it on their site 69" long .if your looking for oem cable ,google the gm number but be prepared to pay 3-4 times as much Bob

Yes I purchased that cable. The carb end is wrong. That is bolt on and mine is push on. I did try to replace the knob with a bolt on style but the amount of cable movement is not enough to give me full throttle.

Here's a link to mine that shows the stock style mounting on my 77 , it might help some as mine is clipped on but doesn't use the ball stud

Re: 1978 P10 Step Van

Wow thanks. I am going to look at mine this week as its not my daily driver and just got in from travels out of state. I think my mounting bracket is bent compared to yours. I think a little adjusting my get it working.
Thanks

Re: 1978 P10 Step Van

Koffer: Are you running a Rochester 1me carb? If so on mine there is three vacuum ports. From looking at it standing in front of the hood. There is one on lower right and two on left side (vehicle right). Where do your ports go? Mine has been changed and the lower front goes to the side and the other side goes to the vacuum advance on the carb. Thanks for all the info.

The front one at the base of the carb goes to the air cleaner hot air diverter vacuum temp sensor valve

Re: 1978 P10 Step Van

The vacuum line from the dist advance goes to the bottom port next to the idle stop solenoid . If there's one above just cap it off

Re: 1978 P10 Step Van

Thanks. That will help me fix some of my issues. One last question where does the hot air port on the air cleaner go to? Mine has nothing. Parts manual shows a box mounted on the intake or exhaust manifold with a metal hose.

Thanks
Travis

I've not had any problems running without it at this time even on the coldest days so far .

Re: 1978 P10 Step Van

Wow. Some parts are hard to find. I don't think I will find one. Mine is running a little rough on hard acceleration but I am going to rebuild the carb and go from there. Thank you for the pictures. I been searching the internet for hours a day looking for pictures of these items.
Thanks
Travis

Some parts are the same as the 67-72 pickup/blazer / suburban times .
The dash mounted ignition , marker lights ,tail lights ,interior light steering column just to name a few things I can think off the top of my head .
The reverse lights used on mine are from the mid 60s fleet side pickups .

Re: 1978 P10 Step Van

Well Just rebuilt the carb and found out someone pull the choke pull off from it. That is why my ports are going to weird places. Here is a pick of the Step van. I have a lot of work to do.

It's naked ,

mine came from the factory sporting a coat of the 312L frost white solid paint option

Mine was factory stripped. The build sheet is inside and states "remove paint". I am going to shine is up and take the oxidation off.

Koffer: Would you mind snapping one more picture for me? I would like to see what the choke pull off rod looks like.
Thanks
