Re: Keep Your Cool! Vintage Air Sure Fit Install in a 67 C-10

The next part is up for debate on how to do this. I wish I would have installed the hoses/lines with the unit loose in the cab so I could tighten everything easier with the firewall cover OFF, but lessons learned. It wasn't that hard to do, just a bit of a pain with the firewall cover on and the unit bolted snugly into the cab. In hindsight I would have left the firewall cover OFF until last.

Remove all grommets from the firewall cover so it's easier to push the hoses and lines though. I started with the #6 hardline that goes from the underdash unit to the evaporator. I put the grommet on it and put it through the firewall cover.

Don't snug up any of the grommets until all the lines are installed, it's much easier that way, but also, DON'T FORGET TO PUT THE GROMMETS ON, you don't want to have to unhook lines and buy new rubber O ring gaskets.

Re: Keep Your Cool! Vintage Air Sure Fit Install in a 67 C-10

I should probably finish this huh?

Hmmm, what the heck was next?

Here's what your firewall will look like with the underdash unit installed in the cab and the firewall cover on.

Again, I'd like to stress that this may be easier to install with the cover off BUT don't forget to at least run the lines through the firewall cover and the cover that covers the firewall cover! If you don't you'll be cutting the cover or unhooking lines and putting them on again!

It's difficult to drill from the inside of the engine bay with the inner fender in the way, so I used my dremel to drill out at pilot hole in the center, then from inside the cab, I was able to drill out the 5/8" hole. Make sure you center your first hole well, or you'll be drilling through the plastic cover....

*Note: You could put the cover on, mark the 5/8" vent hole, remove the cover, THEN drill it out so you don't mess up the plastic. Then you can install the cover with all the sealant as shown above.

Sorry, no pics on this one.
In this pic you can clearly see the drain hole that needs to be drilled near the bottom center of the cab. This is where the water will drain out of the cab.

Re: Keep Your Cool! Vintage Air Sure Fit Install in a 67 C-10

Take the number six hardline with the firewall cover on it and install it on the truck. It will only "fit" one way. The higher/shorter end needs to go to the firewall. Make sure you put #6 O ring fittings on BOTH ends with the supplied lubricant. Be sure to use wrenches on BOTH nuts. Tighten it down!

It's a little tricky to tighten it down in the cab, but it can be done!

Re: Keep Your Cool! Vintage Air Sure Fit Install in a 67 C-10

The next step is to run the 3/8" heater hoses through the cab. I cut mine long so that I had enough room to move around stuff.

There are no grommets on the firewall cover for these. To make them easier to slide through the firewall cover easier I put some petrolium jelly on the ends of the hoses. Leave the firewall cover off still, you still need access through it, just slide the hoses through for now.

A trick to get the hoses to go onto the underdash unit easier is to use a wrench end that is a little larger than the 3/8" heater hose line to stretch it a little. I could not get my lines to slide on without doing this.

Re: Keep Your Cool! Vintage Air Sure Fit Install in a 67 C-10

Be sure to use hose clamps and put the hoses on the underdash unit. Top to top, bottom to bottom. Also, make sure the hose clamps are on BEFORE you put the hoses over the fittings, it's a very tight fit and they're not easy to get on after the hoses are on. Tighten down the hose clamps. Leave 'em loose on the other ends for now.

You may have to slightly bend the tubing so that it will line up with the hole in the cab (I had to) just do it very slowly and carefully! I only had to move it about 1/4" up (you can see how close the hoses are to the bottom of the opening.)

Re: Keep Your Cool! Vintage Air Sure Fit Install in a 67 C-10

Last hose! WOHOOO!!!!1

This is the big one, the #10 discharge hose. Put the grommet on the hose FIRST!

Install a #10 rubber O ring gasket on both ends of the hose and put plenty of the supplied lubricant on them.

Put the hose through the loose firewall cover.

Loosely install the hose onto the underdash unit and A/C compressor. Once you have the hose turned the way you want it, tighten down the fittings on both the A/C compressor and the underdash unit. Again, it's hard to get to the underdash unit, but it can be done

Next, slide the A/C/heat cable through the hole in the firewall cover with the grommet on.

You can finally slide the firewall cover on! VA recommends you put a bead of caulking around the opening before snapping it in place (it uses metal clips already installed.)

Once the cover is on, use a small screwdriver and carefully push the grommets into place. The all went on easy except for the #10 hose. Take your time with it, it will go on properly.

Re: Keep Your Cool! Vintage Air Sure Fit Install in a 67 C-10

Now it's time for the heater control valve. There were no specifications on where to cut the heater hose, so I cut mine close to the firewall cover. I wish I had cut it so it was an inch or two longer. Oh well.

Anyway, cut the UPPER 3/8" heater hose near the firewall, I guess exactly where is up to you and your interpretation of the VA Instructions.

Anyway, install the control valve so that it is somewhat level. Install the 3/8" hose you just cut off onto the other end of the control valve. Put hose clamps on both ends and tighten 'em down!

Next, take the heater/A/C cable and put it on the shaft on the control valve. Put the A/C/heat lever all the over on "heat" and move the arm on the heater control valve to "open." You can now tighten the hold down to hold the cable in place.

Move the heat/A/C arm in the cab and make sure it moves freely from Heat to A/C. If not, make adjustments to the cable hold down at the control valve.

NOTE: When installing the control valve there is a directional arrow on it. You want the arrow to point TOWARDS the cab of the truck. Hot water will flow from the intake manifold to the control valve, through the heater core in the VA underdash unit, then back through the bottom hose to the water pump. With the A/C on and the control valve on "closed" no hot water will flow through the VA unit.

Re: Keep Your Cool! Vintage Air Sure Fit Install in a 67 C-10

Hmmmmm, so what's next?

I guess it's time to finish up the wiring! I drilled a small hole through the firewall cover for my wiring. You could run it over by the fuse box and then over, but I thought, what the heck, just drill a hole (You can do the same for the power wire too, as you'll see in a minute, but you'll probably need more wire...)

You need to run the blue wire from the A/C thermostat through the hold in the dash to the engine bay and then hook it up to the binary compressor safety switch we installed on the #6 hardline earlier.

there is also a "loose" blue wire with the kit. This wire needs to go from the binary compressor safety switch to the black wire coming out of the compressor. The blue wires simply push onto the binary switch and the blue and black wires push together at the compressor. Simple

Re: Keep Your Cool! Vintage Air Sure Fit Install in a 67 C-10

Almost there, just one more wire! (Well, really 2!)

The kit comes with a little junction box (30 amp circuit breaker) with a rubber cap on it. Remove the rubber cap. Take the nuts off and put the thick red wire from the power relay on one side of the 30Amp circuit breaker, put the nut on and tighten it down. There is another "loose" thick red wire that comes with the kit. Put one end of it on the other end of the 10 Amp circuit breaker, put the nut on and tighten it down.

Next, install the circuit breaker somewhere. I installed mine in an existing slot looking thing on my fender. I drilled 2 holes and installed screws with nuts to hold it down. Put the rubber cap back on the circuit breaker.

Next, you want to take the nut off of your batterys junction box and put the last loose end from the 10 Amp circuit breaker on it and tighten the nut back down.

Make sure the battery is still unhooked

YOU NOW HAVE THE WIRING COMPLETE!!!! WOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

THAT WASN'T SO HARD NOW, WAS IT?

Re: Keep Your Cool! Vintage Air Sure Fit Install in a 67 C-10

Hmmm, what's left???

Heater hoses! Ok, The top hose needs to go to the intake manifold (the hose with the control valve on it.)

The bottom hose needs to go to the water pump.

Cut them down so they fit neatly and put hose clamps on them.

Re: Keep Your Cool! Vintage Air Sure Fit Install in a 67 C-10

OHHHHHHHHHHH! Almost forgot!

You need to put the black sticky tape stuff on the #10 discharge hose inside the cab!

Below is a pic of the tape stuff VA supplies you with. It's kind of a pain to install but is very important. The line will "sweat" and leak into the cab if you don't cover it. The tape keeps it from condensating.

It sticks to itself and metal very well. I put a piece lengthwise across the top and bottom and squeezed 'em together over the line. Works well, hasn't leaked a drop in 4 months.

Also, you need to hook up the vent like that goes through the 5/8" hole that was drilled through the firewall. You need to stick the hose thought the firewall and figure out where to cut it. Cut the hose somewhere past the firewall (leaving enough room to put the elbow on) put the elbow on and then put the remainder of the hose on the elbow. I have mine draining down past the inner fender.

Re: Keep Your Cool! Vintage Air Sure Fit Install in a 67 C-10

Well, that's about it for the mechanical part....

Put the pulleys on the balancer and water pump.

Install new belts on the alternator and A/C compressor. (You only need the alt. one if you had to relocate yours, like I did.)

I discovered that a 3 row radiator and stock flex fan wasn't enough to keep my truck cool.

SO I installed a 4 row radiator (they're huge), a tranny cooler, and a new thermostat and no more overheating using a stock 7 blade clutch fan.

Once that stuff is back on, put the fan shroud back in, leave it loose so you can slide the fan in and on. Get the fan tightened down and put the fan shroud in place and tighten it down as well. Tighten the alternator belt.

Hook up the hoses to the radiator/motor, hook up the battery, and fill the radiator with a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze and fire your truck back up. In my case it was about a month after I started

Don't run the A/C system yet (I did test it with the motor off to see if the fan was blowing and it was) because you need to take your truck to a shop to have the A/C system properly evacuated and charged

I left the A/C compressor unhooked until I could take the truck to a shop to have the system evacuated and filled. You could probably do this yourself (minus the evacuated part, but it may not work as well.) The shop also tested for leaks and all was good.

This part is not cheap! I think I paid about $90 for the evacuation and charging. But I feel it was worth it. I called several places and some were as high as $120 for both.

That's enough for now, I'll do a quick run through of the underdash hoses and glovebox later...
