Custom exhaust help

Hey everyone I am in the process of building my bagged 68. I am ready to run exhaust and that's a first for me. I can weld so that's not a issue. I am considering buying a 2.5" kit that comes with a assortment of bends and piecing it together but don't have a clue about cross overs and what not. I would like to run a muffler or mufflers but space is a tight. I want to keep the truck pretty quit. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Custom exhaust help

From what ive read x pipes make a little more power than a h pipe does but it is a little harder to package Both of those options make more power than 2 un connected pipes.

If i were in your shoes i would go with the kit setup you mentioned since im sure your setup wont allow a regular truck specific kit to fit without mods.

Re: Custom exhaust help

Question I have is what are we talking about when we talk about more power/less power???
Just say the motor is 400HP.... what would the power be with
true duels.......X pipe......H pipe......?
Are we talking 10 hp or 50 hp between the 3?
One of my trucks I ran shorty headers 2 1/2" true duals with Flowmasters. What would an H or X pipe do for it???
Another truck I ran 2 1/2" in to a Y pipe into 3" through a Magnaflow muffler.
I get the long tube header versus the short or stock manifolds, but I am wondering if its worth all the work for 5-10 HP by adding H or X piping over true duals?

Re: Custom exhaust help

Like you said it is 5hp or so going with either setup over just straight pipes. If you got the room to package it great, if not i dont worry about it myself.

Re: Custom exhaust help

I'll usually make a sketch of what I'm going to install, count the bends and order what I need from Columbia River Mandrel Bends -

http://www.mandrelbends.com/

In general-

H-pipes are easier to package and install than X-pipes. In a street car I doubt if you could tell the difference in sound or HP

The further forward the muffler, the more raspy it will sound

The less volume in the muffler system there is, the louder it will be and the more prone to drone it will be

Every system is going to have a frequency it resonates at. Adding a resonator, even a cheap glass pack, near the exit of the system will take the edge off the noise. There's resonators with exhaust tips built in that are worth considering.

Besides volume of the system, how the tail pipe is oriented will make a big difference. A turndown on the exhaust dumping in front of the rear wheels will be the noisiest and reflect noise off the pavement and back into the cab. An exhaust dump in front of the rear tires will be a little better, but you'll hear a lot of noise reflected off of curbs and walls. The least amount of cab noise will be with an exhaust that dumps at the rear bumper.

For bang-for-the-buck, I like Dynomax mufflers. I don't live in climate that's hard on mufflers, so they tend to last a long time, but they do tend to get a little noisier as they age

Re: Custom exhaust help

You can utube x vs h pipes...its a different sound...some love it some hate it...in a confined space I'd skip either one....
If you want quite and high flow, check out Walker super quite...I've got a new set if 2-1/2 stainless Walker's I'm not going to use...I'd Be willing to part with

Re: Custom exhaust help

.
FWIW

I added an H pipe just south of the collectors ( long tube car headers ). The sound changed. I think it mellowed and softened the sound a bit.

Re: Custom exhaust help

I have had my 66 set up both with and with out an H pipe. The h pipe up close to the collector does a lot to mellow the sound and get rid of the drone and harsh crack of the flow masters. I am getting ready to pull the duel exhaust and go to a single. My race engine builder does a lot of crate engines and has found power on the dyno in 2 1/2" pipe to a merge of the two 2 1/2" to a 3"and then a single 3" out to the side. When he has time we are going to ad a DR Gas muffler to his system and see what the sound level and tone is. If it still makes good power that setup will go on the truck.

Re: Custom exhaust help

Motor Trend On Demand's "Engine Masters" show with Frieburger, Dulcich, and Brulee addressed a bunch of exhaust system combinations in one of their episodes. Not sure if it's behind the paywall or not, but for $5/mo it's a pretty good deal. I pay it because I want to keep them making episodes.

EDIT:
Looks like you can get episode 22 behind the paywall, but frequently others post complete pirate copies on YouTube or DailyMotion or other sites.
