INfo on front D60's

So, I've found a junk yard with a couple front D60's to choose from. Ignoring gearing, and I'm aware of Single vs Dually fronts, what else do I need to know? Specifically, are there differences in the years that will make it easier or more difficult to adapt to my '69K10?

Re: INfo on front D60's

If it`s GM they all bolt up the same to the springs. You can use a Dodge, but spring pads are a tad wider.I believe they are close enough, but moving them would be best way to handle it.

Be sure to get the D60 spring plates. They are different than the 1/2 ton stuff.

Re: INfo on front D60's

Only thing that changed on GM 60 are the inner shafts, they went from tapered in 77 to non-tapered around 80-81. Dodge was the same way. Dodge will bolt to the springs, a 1/4" per side isn't really much to worry about. The shocks, u-joint, and brakelines all need to be addressed as they are different between the two. Also Dodge has external lockouts on the early ones, up to late 80s I believe. Ford used 60 in the mid 70s, but weren't all that good. Low pinion, small u-joints, 30 spline inners and small outers. 77.5-79 are the ones to get, spring width is close to GM, u-joint is same most of the time, but still need to look at braklines and shocks. Either aren't too difficult. Ford didn't use a 60 front until 85, but they had the wider pad width, which can be a problem with tires rubbing at full lock. I've messed with them all, so know about them!!!!

Re: INfo on front D60's

Personally, look for a Dodge D60...they seem to ALWAYS go cheaper than the GM counterparts. External hubs? Prove to me they're weaker than internals, and maybe I'll start believing it. You will need to change the pinion yoke on one, though.

Whatever you do end up finding, locate the BOM on the axle tube and decode it on dana's website. it will let you know approximate year, original gear ratio, and type of differential (e.g. trac-lok, powr-lok, detroit).

Re: INfo on front D60's

I just read over this thread and found no words against the Dodge external hubs.

Re: INfo on front D60's

Got a Dodge external hub complex? I think I see where you got that.I`m dislexic and had aahdd(and retarded). The following statement about the Ford hi-pinions?
I agree about the Dodges coming up cheaper for the same axle.I had an`87 W250 and it had a Dana60.Dodge wasn`t selling alot, but these axles came in alot of what they did sell.

Let me get mine squared away, and I was going to PM you the contact info. The place is about 30 miles north of Lafayette, so I know it'll be a haul. And I'm dying to go to the badlands again, and the g/f is about to go postal on me if I don't take her soon!
