Is this what i can expect?

I was at a car show last saturday in Atlanta, and came across this truck.



After looking at it for a bit i noticed the grill and fenders arent lined up well.




My question is is this due to poor repro quality, or are the fenders and grill not linged up properly? If this truck belongs to anyone here please dont be offended by me pointing this out, I simply want to know if the grills are a good fit or not. David

Odds are the problem is aftermarket fenders. Where the fenders make the first 90* bend toward the center of the truck, they don't go far enough before they make another bend toward the front of the truck. We didn't realize this on my K10 until we went to mount the grill. However we didn't leave things like this fella did. The dolly and hammer was broken out and the fenders got the extra roll they needed. Then they had to be painted again.

yeah you have to expect to massage everything prior to paint to get a great fit even oem stuff might need some work// alot of "builders" its a streach of thier talent to just open the boxes up and the final assembly shows it

These older vehicles were not built to the tolerances of today's standards and many people do not realize that until hey get in to building one. Sometimes you have to "persuade" the parts into fitting!!

This is one reason the price of pro builds is so high.Usually they build the truck completely,in primer.Any adjustments like this one can be made,all the brackets ect. are drilled correctly,all of the parts test fitted.At one time builders would do all this and even drive the vehicle for a while.After that it was blown all apart and any fixes performed then it was off to paint and final finish work.Over time most pro shops have determined what has to be done and they just do it.Before everyone used JY parts and had to massage or modify them to fit so it was a little more involved.Now everyone uses well engineered kits for suspension and such so that part is already good to go.

After looking at the pictures again it may be one of the chromed grilles that everyone is talking about that do not fit very well.

Is there one supplier that is more likely to have "better" ( needing less massaging) than others, or is there one (or more) to avoid? David

With me it was the grill assembly as I have the original fenders on my truck. I went through 3 grill kits and on the third one I had to modify things to get the best fit that I could. The two tone paint scheme really shows this up more so then if it were one color. The kit was supplied through a local hot rod shop who uses Classic Industries who I think have a really crapy attitude with regards to customer service!! I would never use their products from them or a dealer who uses them as a supplier again!

The dealer gave me a $180.00 in store credit and I wrote a tech article for him how to install the grill which is included with every grill he sells.

It`s that steel chromed grille.It just doesn`t have the proper radius and is not the proper measurement to fit over the mating area.No fenders are made that bad.That grille would never fit over that are with any amount of "massaging".The grille is a poor custom chrome piece never made by the factory.LMC produced them,initially.Then,became available to all vendors.
It`s a shame after all that work that a guy pays good money to screw his truck up with crap parts.

This is actually pretty common to see at shows. What surprises me is when a vehicle wins and looks like that. Most people wouldn't even notice it if they weren't looking or didn't have one themselves.

I would have sent that grill back, there's no sense in companies putting out products like that. Especially for the money we shell out for parts.

My wife actually made a good comment on this the other day while watching a build on tv with me (they were massaging a quater panel) she said "you know after fifty years (the car)you would think a company could get the measurments right"

Hello there Speicial-K,

Do you know if a 67 > 72 GMC P/UP is supposed to have a gap between the top bar on the grill and the hood? I have seen old work trucks not hot rods and this is the case. The hoods appear to be adjusted properly on the sides and the back closest to the windshield. The hood appears to be too short in the front.

DAMN that's a nice truck, kinda sucks about the grill alignment.
