GMC - Painted grill vs chromed/anodized - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Saw this in Classic Truck and I really like how it looks. I figure with all the work my current grill needs (surface rust, filling pits, welding a crack), painting it would be cheaper than sending it out to be chromed. And since this is a project, I'd rather do as much as I can myself (and keep the costs down).

Anybody else painted your grill? How'd it turn out, how's it lasting?

Edit: And for clarification, I plan on keeping the black parts of the grill black. Just going from the chrome look to something like shown below, maybe a satin silver.

I thought that only the 67 GMC had a painted grille.
But I do think it would/could look good.

It could look good if done right. i thought about doing white on a 71/72 grille everywhere that is chrome, use the black accent, keep headlight doors and surround in chrome. That was to look "as factory" on a 71/72 as they did in earlier years. I like the use of gunmetal metallic in certain applications, as well as other carefully chosen colors. But I don't like monochromatic unless it's a full custom job done right...like a black with traditional flame job

Well I'm pretty sure mine was painted from the factory. That grille was in perfect condition. I cleaned it, scuffed it, primed it and painted it.

I painted my outer grill on my 72, looks good (silver metallic) scuffed with red scotch brite then epoxy primered then painted with good quality ppg paint. Good luck

I have to say that silver grille (probably a grey or argent silver) looks great, especially with the black pinstripe.
