Noisy windshield

My son-in-laws full size pickup makes a noise when driving that sounds like heavy rain hitting the windshield. Seems to be coming from the passenger side from right in front of where I sit. Has anyone ever dealt with or heard of this? He has not mentioned having had it replaced.

Re: Noisy windshield

When you are going down the highway it sounds like rain drops hitting the passenger side of the windshield. It has been doing it since he got the truck.

Re: Noisy windshield

Does he have a bug guard on the front of the truck?

This may sound stupid, but it's true. With no bug guard on the hood, the air flows over the hood and around the windshield properly and no noise. A bug guard disrupts the air flow over the hood and causes the side window trim rubber to "flap" or vibrate a little in the wind causing the rain or flapping sound you're probably hearing. I tried this on my truck (bug guard vs no bug guard) and with the bug guard on there's noise, off, no noise.

Here's a fix for it:

http://www.gm-trucks.com/home/Techni...ug-shield.html

Post Number 6 in this thread is interesting too:

http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/inde...ield+noise+fix

I've actually never done anything to fix mine... I kinda like loud music...

Edit: What year is the truck, I think this only applies to the 99-02 silverados and 99-07 classic sierras, I don't know if the 03+ silverado's new square nose caused this sound or not?

Re: Noisy windshield

Thanks sounds like I may be able to look into a couple of things for him. I don't think he has a bug shield but I will check it out. Thanks for the link.

I've also read that some people think that a brush guard can cause it too, but mine didn't seem to when I took the bug guard off.

Also, a lot of these trucks are 8-10 years old now... maybe the rubber around the windshield is worn out from the weather/sun, etc. and is flapping now?

I will admit, that the few times I turn my stereo down, it is annoying as hell. But again, I rarely drive without the tunes cranked and it only seems to happen at 50-55mph+

Re: Noisy windshield

Isn't it crazy that a bug guard can do that? Mess up the entire areodynamics of the truck?

My hood is completely chip free, so on it stays!

Re: Noisy windshield

Me and my brother bought 2 '07 silverado's that did the same thing. Took it back to dealer and they fixed the rubber around the windshield, said it was a common problem. Sounded exactly like rain hitting the windshield, my dads '06 does the same thing,,,, he just can't hear it.

Re: Noisy windshield

My '04 does the same thing. I didn't know about the window molding but one thing that does rattle on mine is the outermost part of the passenger side windshield wiper blade. I have those new ones that don't have the metal frame. When they are parked there isn't a lot of pressure on that part and the airflow makes it flutter which causes the same sound.

Re: Noisy windshield

Common problem. I just used some electrician tape to lap from the window to the molding. We should probaly make a list of common problems on these trucks as there are a ton of them!
