Power steering

Not sure where to post this but here goes. I was not able to do complete frame off restore and now that I am getting close to putting things back together I started cleaning front end and found these cracks at power steering mount location. If I remember right my father-in-law told me this truck did not come with power steering that he added it. I put some soap stone to highlight cracks, also check gobs of welding on other side of frame with angle iron.
Not sure how safe this is please help!

Re: Power steering

Pretty common for truck frames to break out there. Plenty of leverage from the steering. I believe they make repair kits.

What is this on?

Re: Power steering

Can't tell how bad the crack is but may be a good idea to remove the p.s. gear box, grind off all the old weld and either weld a reinforcement plate on the inside of the frame or have someone do it.

After it's fixed you could check with Captain Fab for an adapter specifically made for mounting the p.s. gearbox on you truck. Check the thread below out.

Re: Power steering

On a 2wd truck it is typically an improper installation that leads to a cracked frame. My '66 Suburban has over 120,000 miles with one of my steering box adapter plates and not even a sign of a crack. And I run wider front tires than 90% of the people do.

Re: Power steering

Thanks for all the info my biggest question was about the angle iron on bottom of frame. Was it added in order to install power steering? I will be getting with captfab in near future.

Yeah, it probably was added to accommodate the p.s. gear box.

Re: Power steering

Yes the angle iron was put there to catch the lower bolt. That is not needed if the steering box is installed correctly with all 4 bolts thru the frame. My steering box adapter plate does just that.

Re: Power steering

Highly recommend Captainfab's PS bracket. I have used them twice now.
