Serpentine set up for early sbc
Putting sbc into an s10 with 1948 Chevy 5 window body. Wanting to put a serpentine belt set up in to save space. I know there are new fancy set ups for this but don’t want to spend 1k on them! Doing this project with my 12 year old son and trying to show him how to be resourceful in our build. Does anyone know what years of trucks/Yukon/Tahoe’s I could source the brackets, tensioner water pump etc from? Looking to add the complete set up if possible. Any advice or input is appreciated.
First post but have been a reader of the forum and helped me get the project started. Now is a ton of fun with my son. We have a rule....Dad only works on the truck when we both are in the shop so we can learn together. Posted via Mobile Device |

Welcome, I used a 95 5.7...AKA 350.. Serpintine belt on my blazer, Your heads will need the bolt holes for the brackets...283 -327..did not have these holes. Find a donor and get all the brackets bolts etc, water pump runs reverse on a serpentine belt set up....Engine in photo is jegs...350.

Re: Serpentine set up for early sbc
I've got a complete serpentine setup that came off a 1997 Suburban. I ran it on my old engine.
It is a reverse rotation water pump/fan, uses the standard power steering pump, CS130D alternator (passenger side) and HT6 air conditioning compressor (driver side). It could be modified for a cleaner look by using a grooved pulley in place of the AC compressor and cutting the bracket. I have the balancer and crank pulley for it too. I don't want any money for it, just pay shipping or pick it up and it's yours.

Re: Serpentine set up for early sbc
With that installation, isn't it better to run a short water pump, or is there room for the long water pump?

Re: Serpentine set up for early sbc
Need the long water pump to line up all of the pulleys, if using a GM serp. setup. Also I don't think they make a reverse rotation short pump.

Re: Serpentine set up for early sbc
I believe the Corvette's ran a reverse rotation short pump with a serp drive for a few years

Re: Serpentine set up for early sbc
Possible but I can't ever recall anyone mentioning this over the years but hey, GM had done weirder stuff over the years.

Re: Serpentine set up for early sbc
I love to hear that you and the little one are building a project together! I wish Dad had waited and done some of the important stuff on Rocket with me. Now that he's gone, it's hard to figure out what I'm working with on some of the internals lol.. Good luck to you and the little man.

87 skier....thank you for the offer but I found a 96 Tahoe and was able to get the brackets. They need some work to clean them up but I’m hoping they will work.
Notsolo...thanks for the picture and hope these brackets will clean up as nice as yours. The location of the Alternator and AC are reversed from yours but think I can get them to work. Need to get a the engine back from being machined and will then start to fit these up. We have plenty of body mounting / fitup to get through yet and body work before we completely install but am trying to keep ahead by having parts when needed. Thanks for the advice and help Posted via Mobile Device Last edited by BdBoTie; 07-21-2018 at 06:47 PM. |

Re: Serpentine set up for early sbc
My set up was cleaned, I painted it silver. Some foamy engine bright and stainless steel wool, or other cleaning products get it clean enough to paint. Opposite side brackets should work fine, good luck, post some photos as you go.
