In my opinion, these trucks look best with those knobby, skinny tires. Mines' got the 17" split rims and it's gonna stay that way.

Re: 66 k20

9.00-16 Power king super traction are like my favorite old school tire for these things, the 7.50 is more like what they would have came with though. I like the look though even with the smaller rubber. On the hub caps I ran across a early 90's ram van with hub caps I might try, they are pretty plain looking with no dodge emblem or anything. Dunno if they would look right or not, I just saw one sitting in a grocery store parking lot and got the idea lol.

Re: 66 k20

I like the look better without the 80s hub caps. May look ok with 73 and older hub caps. The 9.00 16 would take your rpms down.

I took them off. The earlier hubcaps are quite pricey so I’ll probably do without for now. I’d like to take the rpms down and if the 9.00-16s hadn’t been so much more expensive I’d have got them. Still considering it although I doubt there is much market for me to sell these 7.50s

I once had a local shop try to tell me my rear diff was junk because it had too much slop. Turned out they had no idea what a Detroit Locker felt like. I'm thinking you know what you are doing, but just had to bring it up, as is a common mistake.
Project looking good, keep us posted.

I could grab the pinion yoke and/or driveshaft and rotate it at least a full 1/4 turn before anything caught. I also could hear it "clunk" when i let out the clutch and it took off. The diff I just put in, I can rotate maybe 10*. Hard to describe but I can also tell a definite difference when driving, sort of like a transmission that isn't slipping anymore. Whether or no I know what I'm doing however is up for debate. Thanks for your kind words and your help, you have been a great resource with some of this oddball 4x4 stuff.

Re: 66 k20

I need either new or better bedsides. However I’m tired of primer and winter is starting tomorrow apparently so I said the heck with it and scuffed and shot what I had. I was questioning my new wheel and tire choice but now that it’s all one color I think they look just right.

Re: 66 k20

There is nothing wrong with current combo for sure man, now a bit taller tire wouldnt have hurt in my opinion but still nothing wrong with the 7.50's. I say run them unless you have the $ for the 9.00-16's and then sell the 7.50s, around here those would sell pretty quick if you threw up a flyer at an ag shop or the tire shop you got them from. Perfect farm truck tires lol.

Re: 66 k20

If I thought I could sell the 7.50s without taking a bath on them I would and get the 9.00s. I’ll probably just wait till after the first of the year.

Re: 66 k20

A couple last things before it’s too cold to paint. I want a chrome bumper and grill but for now this will improve what I have. I’m also really starting to have second thoughts about keeping this winch. It absolutely is kicking my ass at every turn. I like to never got it off, like to never got the clutch unfroze, never did get the drum off so I could get it all the way apart and I still can’t get out the set screw to replace the cable. Anyway that’s a subject for another post.

Re: 66 k20

Wow, the transformation his been spectacular. Nice job on this rig, I just love it. One suggestion that I think would really look good to you afterward would be to (now that you’ve reinstalled it) yank that grille back out, paint that white surround and black background, and you will see an even bigger difference. Suggestion only - but for me personally, it is the one item that seems to be overlooked on about 90% of repaints. Pls don’t take that as being critical, I absolutely love what you have done with this truck, it’s really really nice. I think that would be the cherry on top of all the other great work you’ve done, that’s all. Please keep the posts coming, I’m living my restoration dreams vicariously thru you.

A friend gets his 56 Chevy serviced every spring at a local garage. They told him he had an odd rear axle that they'd never seen anything like it. It is stock rear axle. His brake pedal went to the floor for a couple years, they told him thats just the way they are. I adjusted the rear shoes up and off she went with a great pedal.

I’ve considered doing that. I know that’s the way it’s supposed to be factory. I really do want a chrome grill and a different bumper and I also need to replace the inner fenders. That’s when I would do that if I decided to. No offense taken at all, thanks for your comments.

I've had a heck of a time trying to update. Can't login most of the time, Windows doesn't like the file format ios uses now, etc. I find it much easier to use the board from a pc but I just can't get pics from my phone to it and/or from it to the forum. I will keep trying though

Did some interior painting. Bought some rebuilt vent windows from another member here. I would highly recommend if you are considering replacing all the rubber yourself, his price made it a no brainer for me just to buy them:
