5 speed swap?

Ive been learning the 5 speed in my Fathers 4x4 Dodge Dakota, I've decided a 5 speed is what I want to put in my 72 k25. What 5 speed swaps are most common? And what will hold up to the abuse of a 4x4? My thought was an NV3500.

Re: 5 speed swap?

Being a K25, I'd move up to a NV4500. My son's DD is a K1500, 350/NV3500 with 300,000 miles & the trans has held up well but I'd still go NV4500. (He has not owned it since new & during a recent clutch job we found markings on the trans that suggest it's been replaced)

BTW, you'll love the overdrive 5th!

Re: 5 speed swap?

NV4500 sounds like a plan. I'll have to research into it and the swap.

I own a 91 f150 with the Mazda Overdrive 5th. When my Dad started teaching me to drive standard my neighbor offered it in trade for some yard work. Trucks in amazing shape. Only thing I need to do to get her on the road is a new clutch and new shoes on all 4 corners. Only problem is its not a Chevy

I don't know how it would work with the 4WD, and it depends on which style of NV4500 you use, but here is how I replaced the SM465 manual in my '72 C30 2WD with an NV4500.

Re: 5 speed swap?

The 4500 is what you're after. A bunch here have swapped them both married and divorced to the transfer case. Mine runs a divorced 205.

FWIW, the 4500 shifts like a Porsche compared to my old 465s and Clark 5. No regrets here.

Re: 5 speed swap?

Any issues with where the shifter comes up through the floor? Is your shifter now bumping the dash? Or hitting the seat when shifting. What engine are you using? Mines a 350 cu in

Re: 5 speed swap?

IIRC the shifter moves rearward 8". No hitting the dash and clears the seat
