Pricing a 1967 shortbed truck

Back in March I saw an add on Craigslist for some 67-72 Chevy truck parts for sale. There was no price but there were a few pictures and I could tell he had a few fenders and I was looking for one at the time. I texted the seller since that was the mode they preferred. Said I was interested in the parts and could be by right after work if that was good with him. He responded back so after work I grabbed some cash from the ATM and headed over to his house which was on my daily path back home. A young guy in his early thirties said go around the back and I will meet you by the garage. When he open the garage there were a bunch of parts on a rack, in boxes kind of over flowing and some on the floor. Before I could really ask any questions he said I would like to get $200 for all the parts if you think that is fair. I said sure if that will make you happy then I was good with that. I loaded up all the parts except for the stuff in the boxes, he said he was saving that for the build he had been doing over a ten year period and might need a few items.

So I said where is the truck as I did not see it in the garage. He stated it was on the other side of the garage outside under a covered patio. We went outside and he showed me his 1967 C10 original short bed. I said wow that is a cool truck and it would be a really nice truck when you get it done. He said that he used to be really into working on it and had just lost interest over the last few years but was hoping to get it done someday. We chatted for a bit and I said if you need some help or get stuck on the project with something give me a call and I might be able to help with getting it done.

Well that was nine months ago, and today I got a text from saying that he was ready to sell the rest of the parts and the truck. He also said he felt like he wanted to give me first shot since I seemed so interested in the rest of the parts and the truck when I bought the first batch of parts. So I was really surprised that he reached out and I am going in the morning to for sure purchase the rest of the parts stash and talk about buying truck.

I will report back and take a boat load of pictures in the morning. Then only area I am not sure of is what kind of pricing is fair for an original 1967 short bed truck that has not been chopped down from a long bed. All I have bought in the last 20 years are long beds that were,( C10's, C20's, K10's, and K20's. Never actually had the opportunity to buy a short bed truck.

As to price, condition and options are main points to me. Also, I am one that can appreciate any quality work that has been done that I would not have to redo. The completed work might not bring a premium, but it is worth something.

I will get 25 the 30 photos, check the VIN and code it out. Check everything underneath and get the full story of what has been done and what might have been worked on already. He said he would also share all the photos he has of the truck when he got it and some of the work. If I remember right the truck is a factory red paint with some primer areas. Just do not know why I did not take any picture when I was there 9 months ago.

I bought this 67 short bed in Idaho Falls 4 years ago for $1,400. I would have gladly paid double that, so I quickly paid the guy and hauled it home.

So I just got back from looking at the 67 short bed. The biggest surprise was that the truck is a running and driving truck. I spent some time talking to the owner and trying to get as much of the back story as possible. After that we went into the garage to look over all the spare parts. There were several plastic bins and a few parts sitting on the garage table. Most of the parts were very usable items and there was a brand new dash pad still in the box from LMC and a new box of glasspack mufflers. There was probably in my estimation over $5-600 in spare parts that are usable.

I looked the truck over and it is real short bed. the frme had not been shortened and the bed was not a cut down or after market bed. When I checked the VIN code it codes out as a 1/2ton, 6 cylinder truck with cab and bed. There was no SPID sticker on the glove box to look at the model number to see what the wheelbase was. First thing I do is go over the truck and identify what I see as problem areas, rust, modifications, replaced sheet metal etc. So I will list it out the best I can starting from the front of the truck under the hood and work my way around going toward the drivers side all the way around then go under the truck.

• under the hood - firewall look solid no signs of rust, looks like truck color was original Fawn has been painted over
• 350 V8 stock motor with Camel hump heads per the owner I did not verify
• Motor seemed to sit back further than usual
• inner fenders look to be in good shape, same with core support
• Hood is not original but in decent shape
• Front drivers fender is not the original fender but not a repop fender
• drivers door in good shape check for rust and found none, hinges look great
• Drivers bedside not perfect - shows signs of filler bottom rer panel
• Inside bed floor, not all dented up and not rusty. Holes cut into bed from another owner for hydraulics, Had some patch panels in back of bed to repair with
• Tailgate in back of bed, is a repop did not have hardware mounted but was in one of the boxes
• Passenger side bed the worse of the two, back rear lower area real rough
• Bed front panel in good shape, looked straight
• Bed was on with the wrong type of bed bolts
• Passenger door same as the drivers door, no rust, good hinges
• Passenger front fender, dented in from the front, possibly can fix if removed from truck
• Drip rails were in great shape, not rusted, some of the sealer checked
• Roof in real good shape, no signs of rust, checked around wind sheild, also checked sealer
• Truck will need inner rocker/outer floor panels both sides
• Truck will need new rockers both sides
• Truck will need both rear supports repaired, minor rust holes close to cab rocker
• Front supports are solid no signs of rust
• Truck floor in excellent shape minus rust issue listed above
• Interior was not in great shape but could easily be brought back to life
• Nothing under the truck look bad, frame rails look solid and saw no signs of rust areas or modifications, general equipment look to be stock everything
• All glass on the truck was good, did notice the passenger side wind shield had a area where it looks like someone might have ran the wipers to metal on that side

So I took the truck for a drive and no big surprises there. The truck has a 4-speed transmission, power steering, 350 V8. Ran good, stopped good and was nice to drive one with power steering.

We discussed a price and I told him I would get back with him with an answer by end of the weekend.

I have decided to pass on this truck, at this time I have eight other trucks that need my attention. Once I have links to where he might be posting this I will gladly post them here if anyone else is interested.
