Re: Custom Deluxe emblem from Janesville Plant

Well for what ever the reason, I am certainly interested in this and finding out why it is and how long it lasted. In my travels around the country, I always look for 67 - 72 chevy pickups. This is giving me a new reason to take a closer look.

Re: Custom Deluxe emblem from Janesville Plant

Thanks for the support. The why will probably never be answered but the "correctness" is being established for Janesville as a normative build. The serial numbers, as the trickle in, will help fill out the known pool and hopefully help people who have wondered if their truck is correct or why everyone else's is different. It is too easy to dismiss an apparently incorrect truck as a hack job repair when in fact there were variations from the various plants.

Re: Custom Deluxe emblem from Janesville Plant

Bringing this back up. Would anyone with a 71-72 Janesville built Custom Deluxe please take the time to check their truck if they are not sure and post to expand the range. So far it looks like all of 72 and maybe 71 might have been center justified from Janesville.

Re: Custom Deluxe emblem from Janesville Plant

I've been thinking about this a lot. I'm starting to think left over, tooling, or the guy popping the holes decided he liked it better. I'm curious as to the production numbers for each plant and whether or not every plant had its own stamping facility or had sheet metal shipped in... Is there a record of plant variations?
Either way...bump.

Some more info for you. Looks to be original paint yet. The spacing looks to be a little different from side to side.

Wow! A solid black Janesville highlander c pkg truck! Nice. I'm sure it's not "doable" but that would be gorgeous restored. Even has the original dealer emblems on the cowl.

Janesville did not have their own stamping plant. Fenders were shipped in - BUT - I think fenders were drilled for emblem placement in house at each of the final assembly plants.

Plant to plant variation is not uncommon. If you look at the rear of the GMT400 or GMT800 Suburbans you will find Janesville consistently placed their emblems higher on the doors/gate than the other plants.

I do not know why this was allowed (for an extended time), as I would think Marketing would have had a problem with that. I know I was bothered by it. The only explanation I have is that it was a "miss" initially, and then deemed too expensive to fix for the long term.

Re: Custom Deluxe emblem from Janesville Plant

Today was my first day in the Wentzville MO GM van plant, attempting to build engineering vehicles on the current production assembly line.

I did not know this but Wentzville stamps all their own "class A" surface metal - meaning quarter panel outers, door outers, hoods, and fenders.

All underlying structure is stamped by GM Metal Fab or third party sources.

Just FYI, as a follow up to the earlier stamping conversation.

My Janesville truck is ser #147519...

The emblems are slightly crooked when you look at them, I have close ups but they are on my other computer, I'll get them posted Monday.

Here's a side shot.

Mine was originally a Deluxe C20.
1) 1971
2) Janesville production plant

Cool Re: Custom Deluxe emblem from Janesville Plant

Well to help add to your guys confusion.... All of the original custom deluxe trucks I've seen over here in California have the custom emblem centered and down lower like Janesville truck you pictured. A friend of mine has a Fremont CA 72 4wd custom/10 deluxe, now his truck has been reprinted and the tabs on the emblems broke off, but under the emblem there are the factory holes drilled in the centered lower position and the truck was a custom deluxe from the factory

Re: Custom Deluxe emblem from Janesville Plant

Thanks Guys for keeping this alive with new additions.
Litew8, Great pictures... love the pinstripes!
67chevy1series, As far as I know I have not seen a Fremont "Z" Custom Deluxe with a center justifed "Deluxe" emblem. Every truck I have seen for sale with a center justified and been able to confirm has turned out to be a Janesville per the VIN. As to you friend's truck its hard to say exactly why you are seeing those holes. Be interesting to know more about the truck and its history. Remember a 69-70 Custom/10-30 Fremont "Z" fender will have the holes center justified for an optional engine emblem (if equipped). Might be as simple as a replacement fender from an earlier truck.

Yes, I removed the bigger exterior mirrors for smaller ones. If you ever want more pictures, just let me know.
