Scam???

So I inquired on the truck below on craiglist. I would be very wary of this truck as I had him send me a picture of the SPID and the areas where you can tell if it’s a short bed happen to be scratched up and illegible. Once I called it out no more response to my texts. Just a warning with crap like this out there.

Re: Scam???

That’s a nice looking truck, I don’t know if I’d call it a “scam.” Lots of trucks have been shortened over the years.

Re: Scam???

If it was touted as a factory shortbed survivor, then maybe.

As it is, there are many non factory "options" or parts, and I would go over it with a fine tooth comb to see what $$$ I would pay for it.

Re: Scam???

He’s advertising it as a short bed in the title and he claimed it’s an original SB in my communication with him.. I just think it’s fishy but that’s me.

Re: Scam???

Granted a lwb to swb conversion gives you some bargaining room, but I really don't care. I'll look under the truck, as long as they did a nice job I'm good with it. The seller should be upfront with what they have though.

Re: Scam???

IMO...for $25500 I would need to see all receipts for the work, new engine and trans, etc
Get him to give you the title number and run a check on the VIN and title number etc....

25 large is a big purchase....leaves me wondering why its been listed for three weeks...

Re: Scam???

new paint , deleted gas filler , rear tank , new upholstery , I'd bet a donut it's a cut longbed conversion , Some guys don't care but I wouldn't buy one no matter how nice it was . Does he have pictures prior to new paint ? I'd ask because we all know how much can be hidden with shiny new paint . I won't even comment on the price

it's happening so much now that I'd ask for pictures of the spid / vin plate frame serial # and frame before anything else if you really want a factory short bed

Re: Scam???

I agree. It caught my eye because I’m looking for a clean swb. He claims it’s a freshened up original but those numbers are clearly scratched off purposely. It’s worse in the picture he sent because I can zoom in and see someone used a screwdriver or something to scratch it off

Re: Scam???

Also, it’s listed as a 71 but you can clearly see in the photos it has 72 door panels and doors. Rear view mirror is correct for 71 and attached to cab roof.

Re: Scam???

To me it looks like the bed is raised in the front ? could just be the picture but ... Just ask for pics of the frame , if he wants to sell it he'll post some up to prove it's not a cut frame .

Re: Scam???

72 doors & panels, 71 cab (as Toro pointed out), and looks like it was high-centered about mid-frame (and the bed even looks a little too close to the cab to me) - if you want an original swb truck, I'd keep looking, unless for some reason you really like it and seller can produce a build sheet to prove it. If you just want a swb truck and don't care if it's been shortened, then you can indeed find one just as nice for much, much less $. Actually, you could probably find a decent Cheyenne original swb for less than this asking price.

Re: Scam???

There's and easy 25k in it, probably closer 35k. Everyone raves on the price f these trucks until someone actually asks for a higher price. I would go see it in person before handing over cash. Even if it were $500 I would go look.

Re: Scam???

He stopped communicating when I asked about the spid. I think he knows what he’s pushing but he will likely find someone who will not be diligent and they will get screwed. I’ve seen a few people on here fooled by this same lie that overpaid. I have a problem with liars and cheats myself.

Re: Scam???

I don’t know, it seems a bit much to call the guy a liar and a cheat just by looking at a craigslist add. It’s like judging a person after reading a headline and not the whole story. Not trying to argue but maybe pick up the phone and call him, I’m sure if it’s not what he’s claiming he would tell you. Particularly if he thinks your interested.

Re: Scam???

The reality we live in today is that "swb" in the description of any ad really doesn't mean anything anymore because swb popularity has driven the shortening craze. But, to have a seller tell me on the phone that it's a real shortbed and then drop off the airwaves after asked about the obvious scratch-outs would kinda tick me off too - but it's par for the course these days. The good news is that you knew what to look for in the first place - someone will buy this thing, close to full price, and never, ever know it was possibly shortened. And, that buyer will probably be perfectly happy with it!

Re: Scam???

I feel like if you highlight in your ad it’s a short bed when it isn’t, it’s a lie. If he’s unaware of the fact then it’s just a misunderstanding. Honestly I think after our conversation he should update the ad with the spid facts. I don’t care that it may be cut down. What I do care about is if it’s not told to someone. I’ve seen many ads with cut down trucks but at least the seller makes this known. Maybe saying someone is a liar and cheat is harsh but I really think it’s fishy.

Re: Scam???

I think its interesting in the actual body of the ad he has short bed in quotes. Maybe that's his way of saying its cut down without actually having to say it.

Re: Scam???

If you’re not interested in buying the truck, just move on to the next one. That’s what I’d do. There’s a TON of these trucks out there for sale.

Re: Scam???

As long as a seller is honest and the price reflects the conversion and not a hack job
I personally am fine with a shortened truck and actually have a legit 72 big block super
That I've done with a new bed etc. The seller would be far aheaad of the game to disclose
The truth. Some people bash a shortened truck and in the same sentence brag about their
"Porterbuilt" and bagged truck. Moral of the the story .......there are folks that are capable
Of doing this and its all good.

Re: Scam???

looking at the pictures provided, it appears to be a cut truck to me. Also how many short beds have 'heavy springs' front and rear

I didn't know they still offered a short bed with a wood floor in 72.

I wouldn't buy a cut down truck either unless it was really cheap. I would pay more if it was still a long bed. To me the long bed looks better, rides better, and can haul more.

It looks to me like the front of the rear wheel wells are radiused like a long bed.
