Pool Balls - How to Tell

Okay, granted it's an off the wall type of question but........does anyone know how to tell the possible age of a set of pool balls by the type or style of the numbering on each ball? My wife and I on occasion attend local auctions and recently picked up a set of pool balls that I'm not familiar with. I've played pool for a good many of years since the mid 60s, used to be a pretty good stick when I was playing a lot. Have seen a lot of pool balls but don't recall these at all.

We bought a full set of 1-15 balls with cue ball that just from looking at them one can tell they have some age on them. All have a fair amount of "yellowing" or aging but the numbers on each ball is limited to the number itself. I normally see all sorts with the number of each ball in a white circle back ground, some in a white circle back ground with a round black ring a outer edge, some with the numbers in the "stripe" section of the ball. The ones in question have just the number itself in each of the solid 1-7 color balls and is in the white section not the stripe section of the 9-15 balls. Just curious if anyone is a real "pool aficionado" and can help put an age on these.

Like I said, a real off the wall question but has got wife and I a bit curious. Will post some pics here shortly.

I have an antique set that the stripes are a set four skinny stripes. I have no idea how old they are but "old" is old.

Re: Pool Balls - How to Tell

My six year old grandson likes to play pool when he is here and has new rules every game.

The other night I had him watch some trick shots on youtube. After a little bit he said Poppy I want to do a trick shot.

He set up a row of balls at center table and put a ball in front of the side pocket. He put the cue ball in front of the other side pocket. He then said I'm going to jump the cue ball over that row in the center and put that ball in the side pocket. I thought "you bet". Well, he did it first time. I thought it was luck, but he did it several more times.

I may have a pool shark on my hands here.

Re: Pool Balls - How to Tell

I guess it takes a newer set of balls to do that.

Is that a rhetorical question?

Let's just say it could be taken in a number of ways. Who did you mean, Rhett or Rick? I'm Tim and you need to ask them

At a Harley Davidson dealership open house many years ago I was sitting through a seminar they gave on rider safety tips. They talked about considering riding in rain when making tire selection, among other things. At the end they gave us all a chance to ask questions. The guy next to me asks, "What tire do you recommend for riding in the snow?". Really. I kid you not. I figured this guy just started riding that year, looking at his first winter ahead.
