Seat belt trapped my kid in the truck

So we went out today to buy Christmas tree. It was me driving my daughter's boyfriend in the passenger seat in my daughter in the middle. Were all buckled in going along just fine but when we got to the tree lot, the seatbelt would not release for the middle seat and my daughter was trapped in the truck a. We jiggled, we moved, we messed with the button nothing would let go. Started to think I was going to have to cut the new belt webbing to get her out. Finally after a lot of tugging and pushing and pulling the belt released. So I have come home of tried to lubricate the buckle with no luck it still sticks.

How in the world do you get the belt buckle apart so you can check the insides?

Last year I paid a lot of money to have all the seat belts rewebbed. I really don't want to have to replace the buckle but if that's the only way I guess I'll have to do it.

Re: Seat belt trapped my kid in the truck

Before I would do anything, I would be contacting the place that did the seatbelts. It may need a new buckle

It was just an upholsterer that did the rewebbing. They will sew another one in, but I would like to see if I can fix first.

Do a google search, how to take apart or repair a seatbelt buckle. Of course, a lot of these are newer seatbelts, but at least it will give you some ideas.

Pry the buckle @90 flat side up till it opens( use small screw driver and or med flat blade), sound like it maybe the spring steel clip pop out or is broken

This happened to my '73 El Camino and the spring was the problem. I got another at the wreckin' yard.

Re: Seat belt trapped my kid in the truck

I tried prying the cover but could not get enough leverage with them mounted in the truck. I will have to take them out next weekend and use the vice to hold. Ugh!

Re: Seat belt trapped my kid in the truck

So I finally got some truck time yesterday. Not enough to take the buckles out, but enough to try and take them apart in the truck. I did find a great YouTube video that showed how to pry the covers off. In the video, the guy found a penny lodged in the buckle.

It was a trial and I broke 2 screwdriver blades, but finally popped the cover off. Low and behold what did I find? A penny! Just like the video showed. Amazing! Snapped cover back on and it works like a charm.

Now, I if I can get my kid to trust it enough to ride in the middle again!

Here is the link to the video.

Re: Seat belt trapped my kid in the truck

Ive had many a penny mess up a buckle. Especially on OBS trucks. Those buckles like to funnel pennies down there.
