I found a 72 shortbed for sale in the local Craigslist. I have not seen it in person yet, however It has a clean looking body, no engine or trans and the biggest thing is he doesn't have a title. He is asking 2500 but said he would take 1600.

It sounds like a decent deal to me for a shortbed truck but without a title I am a little hesitant.

What do you think?

When I was in the market for a truck, I looked into what it takes to obtain a lost or missing title b/c there were so many turcks out there without one. From what I remember, it's a real PITA to get one in Texas.

If he want's to sell in Tx.You will want him to file for a lost title.Chances are he doesn't actually own the truck if he hasn't.It's cheap and will insure that you own it.That's too much money to pay for something you may not legally own.

yep - don't waste your time - it COULD work out ok, but the risk isn't worth it. if he wants to sell it, he should do the leg work, unless he's just parting it out.

EDIT: regarding VIN, even if a cop friend could run it for you, still doesn't matter in my mind - you'd still run the risk of not getting a title from DMV. Many states won't retitle a jumped title vehicle. Run don't walk. My 2 cents only.

not sure how it is in TX, but in CA it's all about who's name is (was) on the title. and i can say from personal experience a "cop friend" may be able to check who is on the title, but can't help you much beyond that. if you can't get the title holder to sign a bill of sale i would stay away.

price is high to me last one I bought was a 67 swb complete. and extra parts. paid 1,600. I would keep looking especially with no title.

Research it, call the DMV, and do your homework and it will pay off.

I bought an original GMC SG SWB matching numbers 350 / 0010 block for $2500 with no title. BUT I had a plan, ran the numbers and had my ducks in a row before I did it. I now have a completely free and clear TN title and as happy as I can be.

I'd at least look at it and figure out if it's worth your time and hassle. It's funny how before I bought it nobody wanted to fool with it. Now, I'm up to 6 offers on it, all for more than I have in the truck.

Part it out? Naa ..

Run the VIN with your DMV and make sure there is nothing outstanding, like it's stolen or has a lien against it etc. if it comes back clean I would jump on it. All states have a way to get you a clean title now, it may take a little time and a couple hundred bucks.

i'll also add i bought a 59 awhile back,i talked to my county office about no title and she said i wouldn't touch it unless the current owner get you a title(was also last registered out of state) which isn't hard because i'm 15 mins from the state line but was owned by someone here. i told him i WILL be here with money if you get a title. Couple weeks he got money i got a truck.

Easy way to get a title is to have friend that lives in Alabama. In Alabama there is no need for a title on cars older than 35 years, but they will issue one for a extra fee.

In Ga there is no need for a title on cars older than 13 years, but they won't issue one either.

A lot of states have laws where titles are not needed on older cars, people should check.

I can completely understand being uneasy about buying one like that, but really just get the VIN number and call the police dept. they have what they call a 'hot list' and they will run the numbers for you. Talk to the guy that has it and see if they'd be ok with you having someone inspect it / run the VIN on it.

In TN you have to have this 'Hot List' confirmation from the Sherrif's dept, an appraisal from a licensed dealer, etc. Also, .. in most cases if the person selling it has ever had it registered in their name (i.e. Tag receipt proving they own it) You have a notarized Bill of Sale and all your ducks in a row I don't see it being a problem.

These trucks are old man .. They were used on farms and stuff years ago. People move, house burns down, title just gets lost, .. stuff happens over the years.

Hesitant is good absolutely but allowing thieves and dishonest people to run your life is another. .. just my .02.

This truck, cleaned up with an engine and transmission and drivable with a title = $4,000 easily. It wouldn't cost that to get you there.

Check if it's stolen.If it's not there's nothing to freak out about. There are ways to get titles...legally. The first thing I'd do is ask the seller what's up and why he can't get one,then go from there. That's not a whole lot of money for a solid SWB body and frame.

I heard it was easier in TX than OK but I can't say for certain. I'm with screamin I would be all over that because I know I could get a title for $60. But before I went that route I would find out if the seller just "lost" the title or never had a title issued to him. That and do a vin search and registration search through the dmv to find out who it was last titled and registered to. If he just lost it than it would be much less painless. A replacement for a lost title in OK is $10, been there.

Yeah but if you buy a truck from Georgia (and other no title states) the seller that issues you a bill of sale must be the individual to whom the truck is registered or the bill of sale is worth less than a sheet of toilet paper. Ask me how I know. I had to file a lean through the Georgia DMV from Oklahoma and wait a few months to get mine all straightened out. Still only cost me $60 from a title specialist in OK. But that sure was NOT easy. my 2 cent
