I end my training sessions with "I will get down off my high horse if you will wear proper PPE".

Maybe more than you asked, but I consider them all hazardous to my health.

I would defer to say, "they are equally dangerous". If the proper precautions are taken they can all be equally safe.

Not a real answer but read the labels and then make your own scale.

They are all a 10 if you’re just going to paint one truck wear a good Respirator people have a problem with it because they are doing it day in and day out there isn’t eney difference between single stage urethane and the Clear on your base coat it’s the hardner in all three that that causes cancer and paint in a well ventilated area

Thanks for the help. I was just thinking of the DIY people like me who just paints a vehicle maybe every 3-4 years . It,s just that everyone made urethane to be a lot worse than other paint. Sorry didn,t mean to hi jack but got on a need to know , why is the sky blue type of thing

With base clear, what is the window to apply the clear over the base? Someone told me it had to be done within 24 hours. My truck is going to be two tone and I'm not sure how I would paint the blue then the white then the clear all at once.

Everything goes basecoat/clearcoat in my world. I was painting every day, making a living in my body shop when bc/cc hit the market running in the eighties. I remember the first car I painted with it, lacquer with Dupont 500S clear over it, that was the birth of bc/cc in my world and it changed my life! It was SOOOOOOOOO much easier than a SS. Let me tell you why, your control over the shine, it's separate from your need to control paint application, especially with a metallic. But even with a SS, you cover the panel evenly with COLOR, and maintaining the gloss, that's what you have to do with a SS. To leisurely cover the parts with color not having to think about gloss and then come back and apply the clear to get the gloss without any need to be concerned with the color coverage, holy crap, that made things SOOOOOO much easier.


Then, to make a repair, again, you can spot some little paint in, no need to worry about the whole panel, then clear the whole thing.

BC/CC to me was a dummy down of painting! It made it soooooo easy.

So, funny story, I became a paint rep after I closed my shop in '96. So for 4 years I drove around California servicing hundreds of shops, and 77 NAPA stores. I painted in so many different booths (and barns) I couldn't even begin to remember them all. Doing demos, teaching classes, replacing painters in shops while they were on vacation, I painted a lot! So once in a shop I had to do a complete with SS metallic. I hadn't shot SS metallic in years, that was HISTORY for goodness sakes. LOLOLOL, I shot that car like a clear coat, and it was COVERED in "tiger stripes" LOLOLOL. It had to be sanded and re-shot, I totally hacked it over! LOL

Yep, bc/cc is my limit and my choice.

I have a buddy who says the same. He does collision work by day and hot/rod custom stuff at night in his own shop.

He pretty much says the same things about bc/cc, especially metallic paints. The inside of my cab tiger striped (SS) in the corner on the passenger side.

It was funny how it was not all that noticeable until he pointed it out. Now it is the first thing I see every time I open the door. LOL

Has anyone here had any experience with the hybrid method of painting with single stage but mixing clear coat 50/50 with the paint on the last coat? Just wondering if there's any advantages or disadvantages?
