Re: Fixrupr

I forgot to mention that the upper rain gutters were rusty so I cut them out and welded new sheet metal. Took a lot of time to get them to look strait and back to factory.

Re: Fixrupr

Next up for sanding and finalizing for paint will be the bed and the buddy bucket seat structure. The bed now has all bodywork finished, 2 coats of 2K filler primer. Now it needs guide coat and wet sanding. Buddy bucket structure needs degreaseing, sandblasting and check welds before priming and painting.

Re: Fixrupr

No work on the "fixurupr" today, son 67 needing a tune up. Changed oil, filter, plugs, cap, rotor and points. Trying to figure out the dwell settings now.

Finished up the bed and fenders for the final round of spot putty and 320 grit sanding this weekend. Today working on the hood and grill, spot putty and 320 grit sanding.

Last thing which is next is to go over the inside and outside of the cab with the same process.

Bought base/clear paint and sealer this weekend.....getting close!

Re: Fixrupr

Yea Le Mans Blue is a nice color. I remember having that much room in my garage. now when I need a table for parts sorting or tools, it's a 4x8 sheet of plywood on the truck frame . at least I can roll it out of the way.
keep at it, lookin good.

Re: Fixrupr

I heard you on that one, no matter how large they are a mess seems to happen by the end of the day. Once the painting is out of the way I wont have the inside of the garage looking like a wrecking yard with parts all over the place.

Re: Fixrupr

I will have to say on my next project if there is more than one coat of paint on the truck I will strip it down to bare metal. The time it would take to strip to bare metal would be far less than having to build up areas that are repaired like small chips.

On the "fixrupr" the body was in really good shape overall, so I went forward with fixing all the dents, highs and lows. Once I moved to the primer stage it revealed more dings and small rock chips. So now those need to be built up to match the surface of the primer or feathered to equal flatness. On this particular project I would have saved time by just striping truck to bare metal, then epoxy primer, then filler primer.

Re: Fixrupr

Here are a few shots of the cab , getting the first go a round of sanding the filler primer today. After completed will wipe down with wax and grease remover and shoot a reduced second coat of filler primer.

Using the Martin Senour cp440 2k filler primer.

The picture below shows where I drilled 1/8th inch alignment holes through the hinges and into the body after the doors were aligned. This will allow me to set the doors back to the original adjust alignment that I did before taking them off.

Re: Fixrupr

Had a great friend Craig, a experienced body man come over and check my work. Its always good to have a second pair of hands to go over the body to see if anymore gremlins raise there heads before the paint goes on. He was able to find a few more areas that need attention.

So I will go over those areas , make the needed adjustments then re-prime. One of the things I noticed is that he used is bare hand to go over the body panels, I always work with latex gloves on. Possible that the the gloves dont give you a true feel for imperfections. So after repairs I will go over the panels with a bare hand, if good I will wipe down with wax & grease remover, then prime.

My next step is to apply guide coat, block, finalize repairs, go over panels with bare hand then re-prime.

Re: Fixrupr

Shot the guide coat today on the bed and reworked a few low spots, had one high spot I knocked down with a slapping spoon and file. Getting it ready to wipe down and shot a reduced coat of filler primmer after the etching primer dries on the bare spots. Pictures to follow.

Been doing the research on whether to go with a drop spindle and lowering springs front and rear or do a bag kit. Hopefully I will get this finalized in the next day or so and get parts ordered.

Re: Fixrupr

It was only $25 dollars at the pick a part and the conversion took about 30 minutes. Once I had the neutral safety switch relocated I mocked it up in the truck with the seats in so I could mark the collapsible shaft for the fitment that i needed. Then stripped it and get it ready for paint. Well worth the trouble.

Re: Fixrupr

Here is a new addition to the shop. A harbour frieght planishing hammer. Went to the store to exchange a item and they had it on sale for $99 , with my 20% coupon it was about $79 out the door.

Actually works well for what it is, had to drill the side of the hammer mount and tap it for a larger screw to secure the hammer better.

Tried it out on a scrap piece of 18 gauge and was able to work a nice 2" radius into the piece in amount 3 to 4 minutes.

I will be making further modifications to it so I can possibly attach a english wheel attachment so I can have a bench top planishing hammer / english wheel combo.

Re: Fixrupr

Thanks for the props. Im in the home stretch on getting this thing ready for paint. Items that are ready for paint are the front fenders, hood, bed and doors. Need to do the final prepping of the cab, tailgate and cowl today.

Then I need to clean out garage, get plastic up for a temporary paint booth with fan and filters. Looks like I will be shooting base and clear on Sunday!
