Dumb question. On tailgate that had the factory band, was CHEVROLET still stamped into the sheet metal, and the band was tall enough to mount and cover the stamping?

All of the OEM tailgates are stamped. The stamping is actually indented so yes the tailgate panels mount flush over the stamped area.
