New Finish on Jimmy Top

Ok Guys,

Looking for recommendations of what to apply to the hardtop of the Jimmy.

My top had previously been sanded and painted. Some parts the sanding was still visible, and other parts still had the textured finish.

I took a sandblaster (very low pressure), and removed the paint.

Again, there are some smooth parts, but hoping these will go away with a new texture applied.

I have thought about Rhino Liner, but not sure that would hold up to the sun without fading.

I've read about lizard skin, Raptor with tint in it, and Shutz Chip Guard in a cream color (then paint).

Can anybody offer advise from personnel experience?

Also, waiting for epoxy resin so I can make the repairs on the lift gate! Looks like I need to get cloth fiberglass too.

Thanks, Pat

Deadhead NM or Iron Canine should be up for this question. I don't remember what either on used. Hopefully they'll chime in. Otherwise PM them.

Thanks Dale.

I did go down to the place that does Line-X and they showed me several pics of jeep tops, trailers and several other items they have done. It actually looks pretty darn good.

The top turned out great.

For the hatch repair.

We still use fiberglass mat for reinforcement, but we don't use resin. We use a product from Lord called Fusor. In my opinion it is far superior to resin. We use it on everything from Corvettes to heavy duty truck hoods.

My son in law just did a major repair on a hatch, cutting it all apart and repairing stress points and hinges with fiberglass mat and Fusor.

He also cut the "droopy" top skin off shaped it with expanding foam, and glued the skin back on with Fusor.

Thanks

Fusor ® 100EZ/101EZ or Fusor ® 120/T20/T21.

I like the heat set because when you get it where you want it, you can set it with heat.

I've never used the faster set ones, because I'm not fast.

The stuff is very expensive, and it mixes in a 4" mixing nozzle, so have all your work ready when you start spreading. Also get extra nozzles.

Some idiot at a show leaned on the hood on my Corvette and punched the hood brace all the way through the inner structure. I cut out a section of the inner structure, and laid fiberglass mat mixed with Fusor then laid the cutout back on and filled the imperfections. After sanding, it was stronger than new.

I put white lithium grease on the bolt threads and screwed them in the holes for the brace. The bolts made it easier to handle the cutout also.

Re: New Finish on Jimmy Top

We used Gravitex for the texture...and liked it very much. Then we painted that. I think any of the suggestions already presented in this thread can yield very good results. It comes down, like most things, to who is holding the gun.

Here's the specific post from our thread: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...&postcount=573

There's more top stuff in the thread if you're interested...link in my signature.

Re: New Finish on Jimmy Top

I wish I had known about this thread when Scot (my son in law) was working on his top. He had a heck of a time getting the texture right. I think it took three tries.

Re: New Finish on Jimmy Top

Thanks for all the responses guys!

Looks like I'm going to try the Line-x liner. They will match my paint utilizing the same paint code I have for the body coat.

I'll post a few pics when it's completed.

Thanks again,

Pat

Re: New Finish on Jimmy Top

I used this on my top when I repaired it back in 2004.
I applied it with a "schutz gun" or undercoating/bed liner gun.

The shutz gun reproduced the factory texture pretty well.

It's held up great but did yellow a bit overtime.
I ended up painting the top in 2006 with some boat deck paint because of the yellowing.
I used this stuff.

Interlux deck paint. Mediterranean White(# INTYKA184Q).
I only bought a quart because you thin it, it's more that enough.
It's thinned with the Interlux 333 thinner and simply brushed on.

As of today (14years later) it still looks great.

Re: New Finish on Jimmy Top

X2 on the Gator Guard. When I use this product I tint it close to the final color, but since the top is going white just spray as is with a Shutz gun. Wait till it tacks up then spray a couple of coats of single stage urethane with out sanding (wet on wet). If I was doing that Blazer top, I would cut the gloss 50% for that factory look. Been a while since I did a top like this, but Dupont (1300xxx) pre-packaged white was a perfect color. Believe it or not, white is the most difficult color to get right. Too many times I've seen tops done in a pure white, and it just doesn't look right.

Here's a couple trailer fenders I built from glass a few years ago. Wrong color, but will give you an idea of the texture.

WTH Larry??? A guy leaning on your Corvette to the point of punching your hood brace through the inner structure? I can't believe how some individuals simply lack any type of common sense! Glad your repairs turned out good.

By the way, what year is your Corvette?
