Just a quick update

I have not been around for a while. My son's 69 is kinda in stall mode. He drives it and has been working and going to school. So we are just kinda keeping it going. New speedo cable is in, but the needle seems to just around a bit. I am wondering if he maybe did not get the inner cable in the slot right, but I am letting him figure it out.

Still fighting some electrical issues. The gas gauge seems to have a mind of it's own, it will work some days and others it won't. Sometimes it pegs all the way to the right, sometimes it will only read 3/4. I have not busted his chops over it, it is his truck. He will get it done at his pace.

The other day, we were working on the front shocks. He bought new ones. And while he was trying to get the mounting bolts out, I noticed a wire hanging down off the frame. HMMM. So I look, and it looked like the ground strap from the frame to the cab. I am now thinking that this may be the issues we are having with all the electrical stuff. I told him about it, and will wait a bit to see if he tries and fixes it. If not, I am going to order a ground strap kit from somewhere and get all the grounds back to where they should be.

Other than that, he is enjoying the truck and drives it just about every day.

Thanks to all on the board who have helped me and him with the issues by answering my, often stupid, questions.

Be Safe. RR

Your son is lucky to have a Dad like you.
Help and guidance with the wisdom to let him learn to solve problems on his own.

It does sound like a ground problem to me.

Was the speedo cable new or used? If it was used I would pull the inner cable out and lube it good with a little light oil. (3 in 1 or similar)

Old school guys that had taken anything apart that had White Lithium grease used on it certainly wouldn't say that. That is the absolute worse stuff you could use on a speedometer cable, or anything else for that matter.... That stuff gets hard as a rock over the years. The best thing you could use on it would be a light oil like 3 in 1.

Just my 2¢ worth.

Have to agree with Loc Doc. Just learned the hard way. Although not an automotive application.

I remember my Daddy teaching me stuff along the way that is still helpful Today.

For your speedometer cable, My preferred choice is Graphite. Link below.

Re: Just a quick update

Always install all of the factory grounds and even add more to help with other electrical problems. The old trucks didn't have the large electrical draw back then. Today we add all sorts of electronics and larger alternators.

Re: Just a quick update

Sorry for the delay in response. I am not getting notifications. I will pass on the 3 in 1 oil idea on the speedo. It is a new cable from Brothers. I remember having the same issue on an old ford coupe and it was the inner cable wasn't in all the way and was jumping around. But certainly a little lubrication won't hurt. thanks to all. RR
