Re: rustoleum paint jobs

I painted my truck with rustoleum flat black 4 years ago, color has faded and chipped around the bed. But no new rust has formed, even the rockers arn't any worse than they were when I painted it. I mixed it 50/50 with thinner. sanded the truck, primed with napa body fill primer wet sanded primed again wet sanded sprayed two coats of black. cost about 150 in materials. Well worth it. I have had to fix a few spotts and sanding it off is just like sanding any paint off.
with in months of painting

about 4 years later

Re: rustoleum paint jobs

Disclaimer: My C20 truck is a work truck and I never planned to do a full blown restoration on it...in fact, I was planning to drive it until the engine quits and then probably part the truck out.... so the Rustoleum roller method was a cheap and appealing challenge....so far I have about 50 dollars in materials including the paint....pictures show truck after first coat....then after 4 coats with a wetsand with 1000 grit btween coats 3 and 4.....will wetsand again tonight and probably apply 2 more coats....I think it looks pretty decent.....labor intensive but kind of fun....I let it dry 24 hours between coats....

Re: rustoleum paint jobs

First pic is first coat....second pic is fourth coat....I left out 2nd and 3rd pics...I used a foam brush on the roof....didn't thin the paint on the roof either....light brush strokes in the roof finish...still looks good though. I am going to do the wheels this weekend and touch up the hubcaps too. When I am completely done, I'll post the full set of pictures....before paint on through to buff and polish....

I used a cheapo foam brush about an inch wide....they are 50 cents apiece at Wally Mart....

I painted the white on the roof and wheels with the foam brush and unthinned paint....slight brush strokes but they look OK....

Re: rustoleum paint jobs

Nice looking trucks and paint jobs!

I did my '73 with the Ace Hardware brand of Rustoleum. "RUST STOP" I believe. Satin white. I used a 50/50 mix with lacquer thinner. The paint job is about a year old now and it still looks good.

Re: rustoleum paint jobs

That looks good!

Hottrucks, I used about 1.5 quarts of the standard white can Rustoleum red.

I would probably get a gallon...that way you'd have a lot of touch up paint or you could repaint again if necessary....

Re: rustoleum paint jobs

Do anyone think this can be done with a metallic additive to the paint? I wonder if the wet sanding would ruin the color?

I think if you want metallic additive, it would certainly be best to use a real automotive quality paint. The whole idea of this is a simple cheap paintjob....JMHO.

I agree with you, but It's got my curiosity up. I think I'm going to mix a paint color then do some test panels. Thanks
