Inside front fender prep ?
How do you guys prep the inner fender area? I had some sandblasting done on the outside and used etching primer on the exposed metal.
Thanks, 7D2N

Re: Inside front fender prep ?
Well… That photograph shows brackets and mounting holes. I would treat the brackets and all the mounting holes and the entire fender with the rust remover metal prep etch. Then I would use the aluminum pigmented permanent rust sealer primer 2 coats followed by a topcoat.
Here's why, when ever you use a fastener with an epoxy primer and break the paint film the rust will travel.. It's the same with the brackets the insides of the fenders is subject to stone chipping which will start the rusting process.. |

Re: Inside front fender prep ?
There’s plenty of automotive grade epoxies available that aren’t brittle and prone to cracking when you assemble. As mentioned bed liner is a nice option on bottom of inner fenders and wheel tubs.

Re: Inside front fender prep ?
I really can't spend a lot on blasting. I plan to do most of the insides by hand the best I can. Will some rust converter in the areas that are hard to reach then prime and paint for a driver truck?
Thanks 7D2N

Re: Inside front fender prep ?
Clean up the loose stuff with a wire wheel and die grinder discs. Rust remover/metal prep or converter comes next like other the brackets. Applied 2 coats of the permanent rust sealer/primer and follow it up with your bedliner, chassis paint or undercoating.
The aluminum pigmented permanent rust sealer cuts off both the moisture and oxygen to the steel. Whatever rust is under it cant continue |

Re: Inside front fender prep ?
I used a roller and a brush to reach as many areas as I could with rust sealer on mine. Then I used gravity - I poured a small amount into the inside of the fender and let it run into the places I wasn't sure I had hit with the roller and the brush by moving it around so the low spot was where I needed it to run.

Re: Inside front fender prep ?
Harbor freight sells engine cleaning guns for $9. It's an air sprayer with a siphon feed and is excellent for spraying rust remover's, sealer's, paint in hard-to-reach areas like rockers and windshield posts I've used this tool for years and it really works great

Re: Inside front fender prep ?
Thanks guys. I did get the clean up done with the wire wheel, sand disk, red sand pad. I can't do much painting now. I will update with the rust sealer.

Re: Inside front fender prep ?
Just to weigh in on this I clean up the best I am able with sanding brushes whatever wheel thingys etc etc. Most all the time I epoxy and then couple coats of high build pretty much the same as the outside. That may be one reason it seems so slow I think well it took forever to get that one done then my wife may remind me that I built blank number of late model wrecks during the same time. Jim

I prep all the underneath of vehicles I do by going to bare metal, then seal it and then use raptor liner, I then base coat clear coat over it.
