Shroud for a 283?

I purchased a 68 C10 with a 283 V8 this weekend that has a finger guard shroud. Is that typical for that motor? I thought the finger guard shrouds were just for 6 cylinder motors.

Here is a picture of the shroud and motor

Hmmm, I'm nor the expert. Everything under your hood looks about the same age.

Re: Shroud for a 283?

If your VIN is CS148Zxxxxxx [or KS] then your truck was originally equipped with an L6 engine. If it's CE148Zxxxxxx [or KE] then the 283 V8 could be original. Hard to say on a 51 year old truck.
In my experience the finger guards were only on L6 trucks.
Wouldn't any radiator shroud for an SBC V8 fit?

Re: Shroud for a 283?

Wasn’t 67 the last year of the 283?

Re: Shroud for a 283?

Yes no 283's in 68. The 307 took over then.

Re: Shroud for a 283?

Here is the SPID which shows by the first part of the code that it was originally a 6 cylinder truck. Looks like at some point the P.O. replaced with a 283. I am going to reach out to the person I bought from. He inherited the truck from his dad when his dad passed about ten years ago. Hopefully he will have a little more information, it is always cool to know all of the back story.

Re: Shroud for a 283?

I only knew of the finger guard on 6cyls and shroud for V8s. It's rare to see an original '67 w/283 anymore. It's been so long I couldn't say from what I've seen. Pretty sure all V8s got the shroud, though

Re: Shroud for a 283?

Special K,
I was really happy to see not only a 283 but the original 283 in my 67. Still has the oil bath breather that is listed on the SPID as well.

I’d like to hear more back story on the OPs truck when it’s found.

Re: Shroud for a 283?

That bypass hose looks like big-truck stuff. And are those non-script flat valve covers? How do you know it's a 283 and not 327, 350.... with a 68 back intake?

Looks like a good one though. Enjoy.

Re: Shroud for a 283?

The single pyramid heads are like the 552's that came on my 67 Bel Air 283, but could be earlier?
Looking at the valve covers closely, do they have script?
I wonder too if it could be a medium duty 283, perhaps a 327?

LOL, I'm an expert at nothing. I only know that my first sentence, I experienced. Still have the engine...

Will be curious what landarts finds out. Numbers on block, etc

Didn't 307's have a pcv in 1968? This engine has a breather cap.

I can show you two. The wife & I both have 67s with the original 283s in them. Great little engines

Re: Shroud for a 283?

So I'm just dyin' to know... Does the 283 have any peculiarities to it that a shroud from a 350 won't work?

283's have a PCV (I just don't know when the PCV's started on 283's and 327's, I know older engines just had a draft tube that was merely a vent...), it's just not in plain view. It is plumbed to the hole, back by the distributor. That hole went away when the new large journal blocks came out in 68, making the PCV in the valve cover a needed thing..

Here is a close up picture of the script valve covers. I do not know for sure, right now going by what the P.O. has explained in the back story of this truck. I am in the process of doing a complete tuneup with new ( plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, points, condenser, battery and battery cables) while I am doing that I will try to see if I can see the engine codes with possibly a mirror or something.

Pict 1 is picture of the script valve cover
Pict 2 is me towing home this last Sunday

Yes the mirrors are coming off already have a nice pair of 5" rounds mirrors that are worn to bolt on.

Re: Shroud for a 283?

The block numbers are at the back of the drivers side head. You may need to take a wire brush to the crud behind there. I usually just go to the car wash, take a can of HO'Reillys engine degreaser, and get after it.
Beware, there's not many brands of points that are worth owning these days. I don't know what to recommend...
Beware some of the adjustment bolts now use a metric allen wrench. Tha might be first thing to check when purchasing points. I forgot what the original size was 1/8", I believe...

Re: Shroud for a 283?

Here’s my 67 with original 283. Pay no attention the the ugly plug wires or the cold snack. It was a hot day in the shop and those were the only wires the parts store had and I wanted this thing to run.
