Re: 72 highlander seat cover

I saw some listed at a dealer in Texas but they are high. Pretty sure they were over $700.

SMS Fabrics in Oregon.

https://smsautofabrics.com/collections/1972-gmc

Also, SMS will make them for you. I ordered a green plaid in October without the scrolls in the center. They told to expect it sometime around March. $755, up front.

Re: 72 highlander seat cover

I called these people for my material. You will have to find an upholstery shop to sew it up.

Southern Classics in TX or member Truckseats sell complete covers with scrollwork on the parchment. Southern Classics should have them in stock.

Re: 72 highlander seat cover

So...if you buy all the material up front from SMS etc.....what does it all cost to get it done up?

Do you put this one yourself?......what does the upholstery shop charge once they receive the fabric?

...I'm going to have to redo my blue/white highlander in the next 1-2 years so I'm gearing up for this process.

IIRC the last one cost about $300 labor.

SMS sells the scroll section also. The last one we ordered took a while.

Re: 72 highlander seat cover

That's IT! Thanks Doug. There you go Joe, sorry about the name being off a bit.

As to cost questions - I had mine put together by Tim (Truckseats) and the fabric and vinyl came from SMS. It was before they (SMS) had gotten the operation running a bit more smoothly, and scrollwork on the Highlander vinyl sections was a new thing still (they used to come with no scrollwork). They initially did it in saddle or something the wrong color. Tim was helpful as the middleman/final assembler, but I also spoke directly to the guy at SMS. In the end, it cost me close to $700, so the finished price isn't out of the ballpark for what SW Classics sells them for. Mine took somewhere between 6-9 months to complete. I'm sure Tim and SMS are much faster now as they have done many more of these. I don't know what Tim's final price is these days, it may beat SW classics, I just don't know as it's been awhile. I can say that I've seen the SW Classics seat covers at Fort Worth Good Guys and they appear to be very high quality, as did the rest of the stuff they had on display. I purchased an olive custom cloth cover from them because it appeared to have the correct olive color to it in both the vinyl and the houndstooth - the last one I bought seemed a bit off. Anyway, hope that helps.

I was down at SW Classics a while back, and the seat covers they had on display were nice.

They had inner fenders at a great price too.

Re: 72 highlander seat cover

Someone just posted a blue highlander seat on the Craigslist finds thread. Not cheap but looks good and you could have it in a week or two and skip the aggravation most folks experience when dealing with upholstery shops.

Re: 72 highlander seat cover

I saw this one on FB the other day, cars1 shows the highlander truck covers in blue, green, fawn, gray.

Im hoping for bucket seats in fawn plaid, think it will go better with the sandal wood floor mats. If the gray were a little lighter like the original I would go that route...if available.

Looks like highlander plaid has hit the big time! So popular that they are now making non-original color combos just like the custom cloth houndstoothers started doing years ago. I wish GM would’ve offered all these back in the day, I think the two new colors look great - so why does that make me sad somehow... ha! . Being a purist is an illness, but I’m not seeking a cure . In about two years you’ll see fawn and rusty plaid listed as “original highlander” barn finds... I have to admit, they really do look good. I can imagine some pretty cool custom possibilities with fawn or saddle vinyl, for example, with these new colors.

The FB pic is of someones business that restores seats. I think he was asking $700 for that seat complete.

The carsinc.com has the link to purchase. Once at the truck page refine your search to interior, seat covers, 1972 and it will be the first 4 listings (with no pic)

http://carsinc.com/1955-1994-truck-suv.html

I saw in the blazer plaid thread the buckets are $750 and the rear seats are $850 and since I need 2 for the rear that would bring the total around $2500 JUST FOR COVERS!! I think I might get some plain white vinyl bucket covers, get some plaid material and have the centers replaced that way Ill save some cash for foam

I know what you mean, since the spid is intact I feel even more compelled to keep it as it left the factory especially since its a survivor.

Lately Ive decided to make mods in the spirit of if I was able to order it myself back in the day. The fawn covers would be the first thing to stray from factory. I know 98% of people would not know but it still bugs me a bit even to think about it.

The only thing that bothers me about the covers is the cream color of the vinyl. My surviving original rear seat with cover looks like faded bright white even in the areas underneath the arm rests where there was no sun. Looking at pics of other original seats I can see the white is not a bright as the console but definitely NOT the cream used in todays covers. Looks like the gray is available but again looks a bit off against the cream vinyl. Is it just me and my eyes are off or is it a bit too dark or maybe the white thread in the plaid was not so white?
