IF, IF you have sharp drill bits...I've center punched the rivet, then drill the rivet, starting with small bits, working up in size. Don't need to drill all way through, just to frame surface. I've done this at salvage yards, found to be easiest, but must have sharp drill bits!!!

This is how I did it, cut an X into the rivet heads with a cutoff wheel and then hit them with the air hammer. Looks like a really nice project, I'm jealous of the awesome light blue patina you have, my cab looks similar to yours but I have to try and match the light blue and patina on the rest of truck.

Re: Picked up my new project.

I've made some more progress this weekend... removed the bed and stripped down the cab. Power washed the frame and got rid of the 50 years of gunk and grime. I was surprised at how good the cab floor looked. I've picked up a complete CPP LS swap kit with some Doug Thorley ceramic coated headers. I think I'm going to pull the cab since I've come this far. 4 more bolts and I'm there.

Re: Picked up my new project.

Well, the project has taken a turn once again!! haha... Ditched the 5.3/4l60 for a newer 6.0/4l80. Took a sawzaw to the old 3 speed crossmember, mounted the new CPP engine towers and motor mounts and gave her a test fit... looks good so far and the Doug Thorley headers fit like a dream. I've got my motor mount slide plates where the motor is a far back as possible (these photos don't show that FYI) and i need to mount the trans and find a good spot for the new CPP trans cross member. So far i'm liking the setup. i've got a buddy who has a waterjet and i'm cutting a new gauge cluster for all my Speedhut gauges that i acquired also! Pics later for that.

Re: Picked up my new project.

Got the 4l80e mounted and mocked up tonight also. That CPP crossmember is a breeze. Used some existing holes in the frame and it fit like a glove. Like i said before I have the slide plates as far forward (motor back) as possible now. Haven't checked to see what my driveline will have to look like.

I also have access to a waterjet machine and i drew up a new gauge panel and riveted it to the old bezel. I hope these Speedhut gauges work out for me. Seems to be pretty simple so far. That's a GPS speedo.

Re: Picked up my new project.

Is there any other reason, besides the amount of power, that made you switch to the 6.0/4l80?

Also, following!!!

Do you still have the 6 cylinder? Got a friend here that needs one. Also if your not using the old steering wheel would like to buy that from you also. We have a stock 71 shortbed gonna do something to just dont know exactly what yet. Following along. Great build. Thanks. Let me know. We are not far from you in NM.

I want fuel injection, more daily driver friendly, and the LS motor and Trans combo's are a dime a dozen these days... WAY cheaper to get 400 hp out of an LS than it is to rebuild a small/big block for the same power.

I do still have it, but it's already sold. sorry man.

For now, i'm using the old wheel, gonna try and keep it looking as stock as possible, plus i haven't added power steering yet, so the big wheel helps. haha.

Glad your keeping the wheel wrong year for ours just wasn't thinking. If other person wants to give up motor contact "Dirt's72" he is a member and needs a 250 6 cylinder engine. Or message me. He can come and pick it up not that far from you. In Albuquerque. Thanks.

Re: Picked up my new project.

Made some progress this weekend... Got the truck to the shop and removed the cab and we are prepping the frame for media blast and paint... doing all the suspension upgrades first.. 5/7 drop, c-notch, and all the goodies that go along with all that... Should have it blasted and painted in the next couple weeks. Then it's go time on the assembly.
