How much did your driveshaft cost? When?

I am changing transmissions and have a two piece driveshaft. The rear piece was recently made before I bought the truck and looks "new".
I need the original untouched front shaft remade from scratch.

I have only one place in my town that makes them and they quoted me ~$550 to remake the front shaft from scratch using my measurements.

Does this sound about right?

Re: How much did your driveshaft cost? When?

When I went to a one piece drive shaft in my 71 short bed it was $330 for everything new in 11-18-2020.

I had rear drive shaft made for my 4x4 and the front shortened and rebuilt for $744 in 5-18-2022.

Apples to oranges, but -- I had a new rear driveshaft made for my K20 for $634. The original shaft mysteriously got bent when the body shop had the truck.

Re: How much did your driveshaft cost? When?

I really appreciate your input folks. It sounds like from scratch, it might be a fair price.

I'm gonna call a few shops in Los Angeles tomorrow and see what they can do for me, the gas would only be $100, but I'd have to take a day off.
Probably outta just have them do it here in town....

I had both shafts, say 2018. They balanced them, installed a new carrier bearing and U-joints, $450ish. $550 doesn't surprise me, does that include balance?

Re: How much did your driveshaft cost? When?

Do you need a new driveshaft or just to shorten one? September 2020 I paid $160 to shorten an aluminum driveshaft plus 2 genuine Spicer U-joints.

I need a new one, I want the original shafts left alone in case I need to switch back to the old trans.

Re: How much did your driveshaft cost? When?

Just received two CV drive shafts for my K10 project from Carolina driveline. About $1,500 shipped, little over two weeks. Was disappointed they did not clearance the front CV for more angle as I was told they would do. Originally ordered from High Angle Driveline because he makes some specailized CV joints, but Jess there thinks he has an indefinite time to ship. His prices are double, almost 3k. No problem with paying more for a unique product but gave up after 4 months with him. Left a review in the vendors section.
If ordering again online I would use Tom Woods, will ship within 24 hours and would guess a standard two ujoint shaft will be $300-$500.

I just had a two piece rebuilt, new carrier installed, front shaft shortened 1", a 400TH slip yoke with a combination u-joint installed along with both remaining u-joints installed, and the whole unit balanced for $255. Dennys Driveshafts sells their whole rear half driveshaft with a slip joint for $250 https://www.dennysdriveshaft.com/p22...sli.html#photo So yes, for this area in the Mid-West $550 is a bit high. A two piece shaft needs to be fully assembled with a new carrier bearing before balancing. Never use a billet carrier bearing without using a slip joint in the rear shaft. The factory carrier bearings are mounted in a flexible rubber bulb that allows the bearing to move as the rear axle moves up and down. A billet bearing is fixed in urethane and will not flex, this is why a slip joint is necessary in the second drive shaft.

Re: How much did your driveshaft cost? When?

Seems a little high for a front shaft . I haven't had one done but I did replace my 2 piece shaft on my dodge with a one piece 5 inch aluminum shaft from Action Machine in South Bend Indiana for under 800. I'm having them make up a new driveshaft for my Chevell with 1350 ujoint when I upgrade my transmission

Re: How much did your driveshaft cost? When?

Last year I converted to a one piece for my long bed (4" steel) with 1350 spicer u-joints for $350. It was a truck supplier company ("Fleet Pride"-I think they are a national chain)....it was loads cheaper then the "hot-rod" shops who make driveshafts online.

Sounds like a long one piece is much cheaper than a 2 piece.

I should mention that I have a Gearvendor behind a T350. So it was shorter than a regular 2 piece set up.

They quoted me ~$675 for a complete fab of both shafts. $575 if the reuses my rear section.

I'll post what I pay as soon as I get it back.

sounds about right to me? i couldnt believe how expensive it was especially re using my stock driveshaft....but it sounds about going rate. i think without the slip shaft added it would be $400
