Damn nice truck! Can't be too many of these in Kiwiland. American gearheads still remember Burt Munro.

Haha, I've only seen 2 others here. Going to start taking it to car shows this summer, so might see some more.

Burt Munro is the man! The World's Fastest Indian is an awesome movie! Seeing the salt flats is on my list, didn't quite make it there last trip

Re: 64 Stepside - New Zealand Project

Started the install of my gauges today, just a set of Auto Gauges from Summit

- Wired the voltage up (although need to change the wire to a different live wire)
- Hooked up the water temp with sender in the block (accidentally drained most of the coolant though hah)
- Oil pressure is for another day as it's a mission to get to (back of engine) and ran out of daylight today
- Just need to wire in the lights for the gauges which I'll do another day also, wired every gauge to one wire which will make it easier

Also, went to a classic car meet up today. Was another 64 c10 which was cool, but mainly muscle cars (mustangs, camaros etc). Got lots of looks with my truck and good comments which was choice

Re: 64 Stepside - New Zealand Project

Worked on more of the wiring for my gauges.

Managed to get the lights working when I turn the headlights on, and wired the voltage to the IGN port on the fuse box via an inline fuse.

All that is left now is to hook up the oil pressure! Need to have a look look and see if I need a T fitting or not, coming of the block. Hmmm.

Re: 64 Stepside - New Zealand Project

Previous owner had a crappy ancient cd player, so ripped that out with all the wiring, and wired in a new pioneer head unit. I know it's not orginal spec, but it's a nice stereo and happy with the way it looks!

Re: 64 Stepside - New Zealand Project

Have done a few things since I last updated this thread.

- Got some new cooper cobra tyres, with the white lettering on the outside

- Got some autosol and polished up all the chrome and got rid of heaps of surface rust, looks almost new

- Replaced thermostat housing as it was leaking. I installed a swivel style neck incase I change radiators in the future

- Oil change, used Castrol GTX 10w 40 with a K&N gold filter and STP additive

- Have started work on the wood bed, I got the Oak kit from Mar-K. Staining it a medium oak color and applying clear varnish currently. Also got the stainless strips. I think i'll keep the current angle strips on, as they are painted the same as the bed, and looks like a major job to replace them.

- Have ordered 2x Flowmaster 40 Delta mufflers, and getting all new exhaust in the next week or so. Probably going to go with 2 1/2 inch pipe. Am going to keep the factory ram horns and paint them in the future (they just surface rusty at the mo). Will keep the same layout withe the side exit before the rear tyre.

- Got a personalized number plate: CHVY64

- Ordered all the parts for the halogen h4 upgrades. Bought some hella 90/100 bulbs

I've take a few photos of the above and will upload soon!

Cheers

Re: 64 Stepside - New Zealand Project

Been a bit quiet on here recently. Got a heap of pics to upload as I've done lots recently.

Went to a show down here called Beach Hop last weekend. Was epic, over 110k people, and something like 1300 cars (that's only the ones that registered, 100's more tagging along). I counted 5 other 60-66 C10s, quite a few mid-50s trucks too.

Here's a glamour shot I took, she polished up quite nicely. More photos to come!

Looks good...interesting to see enthusiasts in other countries doing the truck thing....Common interests make this a small world. Keep up the good work..

Re: 64 Stepside - New Zealand Project

Hi Fraser,

I've just come across your build writeup here - very interesting and nice truck! I'd be keen to catch up sometime and have a look at it! I'm in Auckland too..

I have a 65 C10 on the boat right now, expecting to be in Auckland in about 4 weeks, so was especially interested in what you had to do for compliance because that'll be me in a month..

With the headlights, what did you require there was it just to swap them around? or did you require new bulbs?

Also, I was under the impression that if the truck was manufactured prior to 1979 you could retain the original equipment seatbelts, as long as they were the original.. maybe that's not the case though is it? Who ended up doing your seatbelts and would you recommend them?

Cheers,
André

Hey Andre

Awesome stuff on the new truck! I can meet up if you like and show you what I had to get done. There was a few things I had to do but nothing hugely major.

The seatbelts have to be diagonal seatbelts (pre 1955 doesn’t have to have any seatbelts). Mine had factory lap belts when it came in to the country but I had to get diagonal ones installed (apart from the middle belt). Seat belt specs in glenfield supplies the new belts and somewhere else installed them.

I didn’t have to get new lights but I changed them anyway as they weren’t that bright. I changed them to some NZ hella units.

Message me your email address and I can pop around and show you my truck and some of the paper work. Happy to help out where I can!

Cheers
Fraser

Re: 64 Stepside - New Zealand Project

Alright, been a while since I've updated this thread. Lots has happened!

Got the exhaust done. Went for a 2 1/2 pipe with flowmaster mufflers. Sounds unreal

Kept the same side exit just before the rear wheels

Re: 64 Stepside - New Zealand Project

Installed new fuel pump (mechanical), fuel filter (in-line) and fuel lines. Loving the braided look!

Also added a carb spacer, but after I test fitted it I needed to get an adaptor plate which i didn't get a pic of, but you can sort of see it installed on the above pic

Re: 64 Stepside - New Zealand Project

Completed the carpet install. All I had in there was a bit torn up rubber mat. Took all that out:

And gave the floor a paint

Installed Dynamat (with some Dynapad underneath)

Installed a carpet kit from ACC carpets, realised I don't have a picture of it, will post it up soon.

The accelerator pedal was a bit tricky. As the small studs where it connects to the floor rusted out. So had to grind the remaining of them out and install new ones.

Re: 64 Stepside - New Zealand Project

All the above stuff was 2017 and early 2018. The truck was in storage most of 2018 as we renovated our house majorly. Truck is back in the garage so making the most of the NZ summer!

Currently in the process of replacing this radiator core support:

Was rusty near the mounts which deems it not road-worthy here in NZ

Tidied up the front a bit with some paint here and there:

Will put the jigsaw all back together this weekend hopefully. Have a car show in a couple of weeks which I want to take it to

Re: 64 Stepside - New Zealand Project

Nice truck!
You might want to find a safer flex fan. Those are known to eject blades. I had one loose a blade right thru the hood.
Do they still have the big swap meet at Pukekohe?
I was there in ‘99 on one of our several trips down there.

Yikes! The fan seems fairly new but I'll definitely inspect it and look at getting a different one. Thanks for the tip!

Yea the swap meet is still going, I've never actually been. Just checked the dates for this year (4-5 May) and I'll be in the US on vacation unfortunately!

Heading to Chicago, Memphis and New Orleans (traveling light so I can fill up the case with parts haha)
