Out of an '88? That's a little late for a TH400...

I'd never buy it sight-unseen though. I'd want to check the pan for signs of a coolant leak or damange to the hard parts.

They didn't use TH 400's then. They were 700R4. which is now called the 4L60-E. same trans, just made improvements and went to a different coding system.

I don't think they were using 700r4's in the 1 tons and dullays. Yes, they were still using a Turbo 400.

They started a phase-out from installing TH400's for passenger cars and trucks somewhere between the late '70s and early '80s, even though they continued to install them in commercial vehicles like busses and utility trucks. By '88 they simply weren't available. They were too heavy of a tranny for the vehicles on the road, and with new emmission standards it became necessary to introduce lower RPMs for highway travel-hence 4 and 5 speed automatics with overdrive.

That's what I meant by "late".

You could still get them for specialized or hobby applications and racing...
