Where can i get a parts book? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

my chevy dealership went all "computerized" and now they can't even look up an old part for my truck..they got rid of all thier old books and stuff..but they tell me if i can get a number that they can get it for me...how do i get my hands on a book with factory gm part numbers and things of that nature for our trucks? anyone ever ran into this problem with thier dealerships??

You need to find someone who was quick enough to grab the catalogues when they went to computers. I have a "GM master parts catalogue" which covers Genuine GM parts and Accessories. They have a metal cover and are about 5 inches thick. It covers from 58-71. There is a guy in Revelstoke B.C who has around 125 of these different ones and wants to sell the whole lot for $800.00. I know he already sold the Chevelle one for $125.00 by it self.

Book store in Seattle, Wash wanted $150 for the same book.

That Dealership ain`t too smart.I guess they need someone to put it on a disc and give it to them so they can make some money.

I'd bet that dealership still has the books, just doesn't want to go through the bother of actually opening it! It's the same here, you ask for something old and you get "the look". It would be ok if I asked for a plastic door handle for a Cavalier though. Aye aye aye...

The dealerships around me threw away all of their paper manuals. Luckily I had an inside connection when they were doing that.

I do believe they repop a parts book for our trucks. I think I even have a copy.

In the parts books bolts are an iffy item to find. If you have an exloded view in the parts book of a section your looking for they often list the bolt size, thread length and and sometimes the type. They sometimes only offer the group section in it also. If only the group, then you have to look through the group and decode the GM abbreviations to make sure you are looking at the right bolt.

I am lucky enough to have found a book that lists me most bolt applications from GM for these trucks. I could help someone out in limited amounts.. as in I'm not gonna do every nut and bolt.

The parts book can help identify bolts needed.But,GM didn`t supply most replacement bolts.You`re left to source these locally.

True enough, But with the right books you can have near every GM part number, which references a nut , bolt etc, and then you have a description listed of the bolt, etc. So you could at least know what to get.

Go to www.gearheadcafe.com They sell parts books on CD rom. I have five different CD roms. They are great. Plus, just print the page you need, get it greasy and toss it. They only cost about $50.00 each.
