Help. trying to diagnose a fuel problem over the phone.

i've got a buddy that has a '70 with a 350 and holley with dual fuel lines coming from a pressure regulator feed by a standard mech fuel pump. he says that every once in a while, (no rhyme or reason) it'll just die, he said if he unhooks the fuel line to the regulator starts it, (it fires right up) runs the fuel out of the carb, hooks it all back up and it runs again...

is it creating a vacuum in the tank that the pump can't handle or what?

i can't put my hands on the truck so i'm shooting in the dark here.

help.

Does he need the pressure regulator? Is he starving the engine? Is the regulator adjustable, and if so, does he have it dialed in correctly?

Is his gas cap vented?

the dual feed from the regulator might be causing a problem. does he have a pressure gauge?

Re: Help. trying to diagnose a fuel problem over the phone.

if he removes the gas cap after it's been running and hears a wooshing sound he has a venting problem with the gastank

does he have lazyman rubber fuel lines? not unusual for those to collapse and or knikup or lay on hot metal and cause vapor lock problems

an old dirty gastank can get the fuel sock in the tank clogged

Re: Help. trying to diagnose a fuel problem over the phone.

yes it's got a pressure guage mounted on the regulator.. he probally doesn't need the reguator but the truck used to have a different motor in it and all the fuel was plumbed like that so he just hooked it up...

as far as i know the gas cap is vented...

i dont' think he's starving the engine becuase it's got fuel in the carb...

do you realize that with a non vented system and your delivery system is in a vaccume that even tho the carb bowls are full the vaccume can prevent it from flowing?? crack open the fuel pipe it breaks vaccume and allows fuel to flow again

Some are vented and some are sealed, the correct Stant part number is 10491

Re: Help. trying to diagnose a fuel problem over the phone.

so the concensus of the board is the vacuum from the tank? like i said i can't put my hands on the truck and see the problem happen.. the kid that owns the truck isn't as some would say mechanically minded... replacing a gas cap would fall under his abilities though... would it run at all if he put the metal in line fuel filter in backwards?

could it be by any chance the fuel pump? mechanical style... would it work sometimes and not others?
