Would you reuse this GM 10.5" 14 bolt differential carrier?

Pulled the bearings on the carrier and the mating surface doesn't look too pretty. Debating on cleaning it up and reusing it or ordering a new housing.

This was the worst bearing (other one was decent still).

This is the surface I found under the bad bearing

The other side was not bad but does have this nick on the surface

I wouldn't reuse it if it were me. I wouldn't want to risk a failure while driving.

If that bearing is a press fit and doesn't spin on that surface, you can probably reuse it. If that surface sees motion, then replace.

Looks like sometime in the past, a bearing had a bad failure. Very possible this bearing has ran thousands of miles with that hidden damage. In any case, do a very good cleaning job on the axle insides to make sure any past bits of failed bearings are removed. Bits of past bearings might explain the damage on this bearing.

Although it is not in perfect condition, if the bearing presses on tight it is safe to use. It's not going to go anywhere. Personally--I'd kinda frown, but I would use it

I'd be hearing phantom bearing howl every time I drove it if I reused it. Probably ok, but if you have it torn apart this far it may be worth calling a junkyard and getting a price on a used carrier as they're out there.

It looks like someone torched it off and got a tad deep. If that's the case, it wasn't a prior bearing doing becoming "heat fused" so it's probably fine to reuse. Having said that, beings you've already got it apart...

as long as the bearing presses on tight I'd run it.

If the bearing fits tight, run it. Some one was ham fisted getting a bearing off in its previous life.

Thanks for all the comments! I cleaned up the bearing surface as good as I could (forgot to take some pics of course) and pressed on the new bearings. Seems to have pressed on tight & is flush with the carrier.

you will be fine, as was said earlier, someone torched off the old bearing and went a little too deep- i've done it myself a time or two but as long as the new bearing went on tight you're good to go.
