Re: 72 gmc c30 machine shed find

WOW thats a great truck. What a cool piece of truck history. I also recently purchased an old work truck - '67 GMC 3500. ( I also called it a C30) Do you know any of your trucks' past info?
I really enjoy seeing survivor work trucks - The Real Deal

I believe you, but I look and look and just can't see it. It's not just the black accent, I can tell the difference with the paint gone. So you are saying the vertical bar is as wide as your other truck and there is a ridge surrounding the openings that the black is painted up to? This is just curiosity, but could you show a closer picture so I can be assured I'm not going blind or losing my mind? I'm usually able to tell the difference from a mile away

Re: 72 gmc c30 machine shed find

I agree, I was able to focus in on my phone and it's a 68-70 grill. Comes to a point in the center, not flat like a 71-72.
I think they are a nicer grill than the later

I'll have to check it out a little closer in the spring when I go to pick it up. Po is a farmer and he's the second owner he got it from an elderly guy out at gadsby AB the ignition key tag says stettler motors he claims original owner bought it new from there. I've got another pic that's on a bit of an angle I'll try load it for you.

Re: 72 gmc c30 machine shed find

After a closer look at my 72 you are right now I'm thinking something fishy is going on. I scoured this truck looking for a repaint and couldn't find any sign usually you can find a bit of overspray on something. Po assured me he never repainted and says the guy he got it from said its all original. Now I can't wait for spring so I can get it home and really go over it good. As you guys can tell it was snowing and cold so it was pretty uncomfortable looking at it after a while. I looked under the cab and the cab floor didn't even have rust on it. Just a little mud on the very bottom of the rockers.

My question is do you folks think I should get the box painted to match the truck or should I leave it original.

Nice, nice truck! Very cool find!!!
If you paint it, i'd leave it red...I think it sets off the body color

Could the "Canadian" build have anything to do with it?

Even the chrome on the dash bezel is in superb condition. Spid says it has a manual park brake what ever that is. It might be the funny looking deal on the drive shaft but like I said it was cold and nasty so I didn't spend a lot of time looking.

You've got me on that one I'm a little confused on the grill but I guess maybe spring will tell a story when I can get a little deeper into the truck.

What would you guys do to fix this I was wondering maybe a lite sanding epoxy primer and shoot some paint to the line where the door closes just don't want it start rusting thru. I only want to protect it.

I would leave it alone, don't sand anything. It looks prefect as it it. It's not going to rust away anytime soon

Oh, Man! You gotta be jazzed about that truck! She's a looker! For my dollar, I'd park the grain box and build up a short stack, like this... I wonder what that would look like on the C30?

Great find! Looking forward to seeing what you do with her!

Ok...if you want those rockers to stay solid, then let another 'rust adverse' Canuck offer up some 'preservation tips' to keep the rust away.
First, you'll have to slide under both sides of the truck cab in the rocker area on your back (...but at different times...lol), so you are looking back and up at the vertical back surface of the rockers...this is the separate inner plate.
If you follow where this vertical surface meets the outer curved rocker at the bottom seam you will find two small drain slots...probably 1/2" or 3/4" long....about 24" apart or something like that.
Get a can of 'Rust Check' or 'Krown' from your local Canadian Tire...then using the red plastic spigot tube spray the rust check up in there at an angle, fore and aft, and in both directions....both slots....and apply liberally in a pattern. Be careful to hang onto the spiggot or you will shoot it up in there.
At some point the rust check will start to drip out of these areas....no worries...this is ok. You will also probably get a little dirty and have some of the rust check drip back on you...but no worries...you are doing the right thing.
This is 'tip of the iceberg' as to what I do every winter on my truck in various nooks and crannies to keep the tin worm away and it has always kept my trucks solid.

Check it out....all good
Coley
