Anyone ever added a fuel filler door?

My Sub fuel cap is the exposed kind, and it tends to "sweat" when the tank is almost empty and leak when full...

I figured it would be cool to add a later-model Suburban gas door and filler neck/cap to solve my problem. Anyone ever done it? Is the inlet on the tank the same size for all the years or did it change?

Hmmm, seems like I'm on my own with this one.... Anyway, here's some info I found, if anyone can confirm, that would be great.

It looks like fuel doors first appeared in 1979. From my old Chevy Duty catalog, 1973 - 81 tanks have a 1-1/4" filler pipe, 1982 - 91 tanks have a 1-5/8" filler pipe. This is indirectly confirmed by my LMC catalog, also.

So it seems that if a find a donor Sub from 1979-1981, the filler neck will fit perfectly. Later years I would have to make an adapter to neck-down to my tank. Then it's just a matter of welding in the new panel. Easy, right?

Nice! I like that. I looked at some Suburbans at the junkyard this weekend and the structure surrounding the gas door doesn't look like it would fit very easily in my Sub...

Was that an easy job for your son? What all is involved?

He had to fabricate the opening, I believe he used an old door sheet metal hamered out a lip edge and cut the circular opening and then welded it into place. He's has done the same thing on his 78 k-10 on both sides that he is building, the truck in the pick was totaled out in april.

Good info, thanks! Sorry to hear that truck was totaled, looks like a lot of custom bodywork there... I like that gas door idea, I may give that a try.

try find a truibuion (sp?) mitsubuishi I believe they had the same door and see if you can salvage it, well at least the opening, will save alot of time making one. Also the newer trucks, I almost forget, they can now put these doors on them. so look for a 99-02 chevy shortbed totaled out and cut the open off it.

I was looking at those also, glad to hear you like it. I read that they have a fill-through type gas cap. I'm not sure I could get through emissions testing with a cap like that... Is the cap a common application? Maybe it could be replaced with a standard gas cap?

That looks great! I assume you used the 45-degree version and plumbed it to the stock tank, correct?

I was under the impression that the Hummer caps were a cutout/recessed type ala H1, H2, and H3 below.

It should be emissions legal, it has a CARB number on the cap
