Help choosing new mufflers!

Looking for new mufflers to install on my '62 C10. Truck has a 283 with a cam and head work, headers, and 2.25" true dual pipes with a 12" glasspack on each side. Exhaust ends under the bed just after the cab and is VERY loud. I would like to keep all of the existing tubing that I can and just replace the glasspacks. Ground clearance is an issue, but a 4" tall round or oval unit would fit fine pending my measurements are sound.

Here are my options:
2 x Magnaflow Oval body 4x9" case 14" length
2 x Magnaflow Oval body 4x9" case 18" length
2 x Magnaflow 4" Round body 14" length
2 x Magnaflow 4" Round body 14" length
2 x Dynomax Bullets

I'm wanting good sound, this is a hot rod after all. I do not like Flowmasters or chambered mufflers of the like. The drone is not my favorite. From what I have read the Magnaflow Oval mufflers are quieter than their round equivalent. Sounds right but does anyone have any comment on this? I'm scared to choose a length and have it be too loud still or too quiet.

Any opinions?

And if I have 2.25" exhaust tubing would I order 2.25" In/Out sized mufflers? Are they flared to fit from the factory? Or do I order 2" to slip inside or 2.5" to slip over?

Re: Help choosing new mufflers!

Those glasspacks are loud because they are very short. Mine are 20" and not loud unless I floor it. If it's mufflers you want, I think magnaflow ovals sound great. I have friends that run them. Also try to get your exhaust exiting out the side or back. Going under the bed is like having an amphitheater for the noise. I also run a hopped up 283 and my glass packs are actually steel packs made by Porter Mufflers exiting out the side. They're Mellow around town but a beautiful noise when you let 'em rip. I know a guy who runs Brockman glasspacks out the back, different sound than Porters but every bit as harmonious. His are like 22" or something like that.

Thanks for the reply. I think I'm going to go with the 14" ovals. Should be nice and mean sounding but not nearly as loud as an 8" glass pack haha.

I personally would use a flowmaster. The 40 series is 14 inches long and about 4 inches deep. The sound will never change.Magnaflows are a packed muffler and the sound will change over time due to the packing getting burnt out. I don't particularly care for the sound of a magnaflow either. Its sort of a personal decision though. You can ask 10 people and get 10 different opinions. Its like your the only one that can pick the paint color you will be happy with. Your also the only one who can pick the exhaust note you will be happy with.

I agree, to each his own. I like how Flowmasters sound, but I'd never run one on one of my vehicles again. I dislike the drone enough to choose a thru style muffler like a Magnaflow from now on. I have a much larger Magnaflow oval on my 2008 Sierra and love the tone. I'm looking for something similar, just louder so I'll most likely go with the 14" cases. This motor having headers and a cam, and no cats will help the sound tremendously.

Thanks for the reply!

Re: Help choosing new mufflers!

50's Flows on my truck, dual with H pipe....exit through the rear bumper, 2 1/2" pipe front to rear. Awesome sound, on a "327" (5.3). Street rod shorties, & mandrel bent downs up front.....mellow as hell in town, she starts sounding off around 3800-up? No drone, that old truck still cruises @105 mph @ 3100 on the tack in OD If you go Flow master, I agree with most guys...the sound will never change. The 40,s are a little too "rowdy", for my taste....go with a 50's muff, & move it to the rear, as far as you can, exit under the rear bumper. Nice mellow note in town or hyway cruise.....but damn near as rowdy as the 40's @WOT! You will like it, & "barney" will not mess with you longhorn
