Cool Re: Cruise control I.D.

Ok, so I am told my switches are 73 & up.

Curious, when were the earler CC dash control switches superceded by the later lighted ones I have posted.

Beings mine is a March '72 build and most likely delivered to the dealership by May sometime, could the CC system have changed in the as delivered or installed application having the latter switch?

Any timelines on the changes in the system at any said month of the 1972 run?

Re: Cruise control I.D.

I would say by gathering information on this thread, that the cruise on your truck could have been added by the dealership in mid 73' as it could have still been on the lot and needed a "Push" to get it sold. Like others have said, there is no proof out there that these would be correct, but the one I found in a 72' with the almost same parts, I will go ahead and use in my 72' crewcab 1 ton 4x4 build I have planned, but I will still persue finding the correct parts for my 71'. The cruise systems like yours and the one I found could have been installed anywhere from 73- present, but they changed the cruise system in 75ish I believe to be on the turn signal stalk. So I believe these were installed somwhere between 73-75ish. Trevor

My truck was a special order; as I know the fellow who ordered it himsself.

I purchased it directly from him; I am the 2nd owner!

My truck was ordered as I have it today.

As for the truck being a mid 73; No Way!

My paperwork shows he took delivery of it in 72.

So back to the CC....

I am wondering if and when these systems were superceded.

Lets ask the members here of this site if they can add anymore light to this topic!

Re: Cruise control I.D.

Do you have the paperwork that states that it came with the cruise? That or a receipt from the dealer that says something about cruise? Not trying to be nosey, but I don't think we will hear much except about the other style of cruise being correct and only it. There is just little information that these cruise control setups are correct, but I would only say that they are correct for 72' if they should be correct. All of the cruise systems similar to this on our era trucks have been on 72's. Like I said though, it's hard to get people budged off what could be correct if it isn't in a manual or documented somehow. Trevor

Cool Re: Cruise control I.D.

I have the glove box "paper" here somewhere as I took it off for safe keeping.

I just have to find it.

I recall he gave me a GM document alike the one above posted that showed the kit; I am more certain today that it must be a dealer add on.

I wonder if there was a selection in the order sheets to check off CC when Special Ordering commenced.

I am ONLY basing my submissions here on my 72 year truck that I have.

Consequently, only more submissions of GM Docs could support the actual changes, installs, and availability in the 72 year only; as I am seeking and sharing.

I personally DO NOT KNOW!

This forum and our submissions can help clarify the results with more information shared.

Let's go people; someone out there must have more on this!!!!

I don't know either, just another one out there that strives for information. Trevor

Re: Cruise control I.D.

I don't understand what all the confusion is about this. This is obviously a dealer add-on. New model years come out late in the previous year. IE 2010 trucks hit the dealer lots in late 2009. When the body style changed in 87 those trucks hit the dealers almost a year early. To the other extreme, in the case of the Corvette, they even skipped a model year with the introduction of the C4. There are no 83 Corvettes

Three things could have happened. 1)The parts for the 73 model year hit the dealers in 72 in anticipation of the new body style. The dealers had them so they installed them on the 72 model year. 2) The trucks that have this style cruise were taken to the dealer at some point after the new style cruise was introduced and had it installed. That could be anywhere from early 72 through 75 or even later if a dealer still had one in stock. 3) the trucks that have this cruise were sitting on the lot until late in the model year or even into the next year and the dealer installed it when the truck was finally purchased.

It no great mystery.

I agree, well said.

If you're referring to the SPID label, you won't find cruise listed on one in 71 or 72, I don't believe its even disputed anymore that the factory never added them, its not even listed as an available option in the dealer books as it is in the earlier models.

That is exactly what my interpretation was of the release time lines I was suggesting earlier.

I am sure my system now was an add on back at the dealer.

It makes sense to me.

The trucks were some of the last vehicles to get some of the options that were available in Cadillacs to Chevy passenger cars.

Re: Cruise control I.D.

Ricks71pu,

The Pre-'71 systems did have a button on the end of the turn signal lever for activation of the cruise. I am not aware of a GM system that used a separate lever for the cruise. Maybe a few pics would help us ID what you have.
